Patrick Kennedy was the great-grandfather of President John F. Kennedy,
Senators Robert F. and Edward M. Kennedy, and of Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith.
He was the great-great-grandfather of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, News Anchor
Maria Shriver, U.S. Representatives Joe II and Patrick Kennedy, and Maryland
Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
Numerous sources state that Patrick met his future wife, Bridget Murphy aboard
the Ship Washington Irving, but her name does not appear on the manifest.
In his book "Kennedy Women," Mr. Laurence Leamer indicates in the footnotes
that that account is Kennedy Family Oral History. Mr. Leamer also states the ship
left Liverpool on 20 March 1849, making passage to Boston in "a month and a day".
Patrick and Bridget were married in Boston 26 September 1849. Among their children
was Patrick Joseph Kennedy, a Boston political leader. Patrick Joseph's son was
Joseph Kennedy who became Ambassador to the United Kingdom under Franklin Roosevelt.
Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy were the parents of John, Robert, Jean,
and Edward, as well as Joseph Jr., Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, and Patricia.
The Ship Washington Irving was 155 ft. long and the mainmast extended 115 ft. above
the deck. On this voyage she carried 299 passengers, including the baby born on
board and two un-specified infants who were listed with their mothers.
