Contributor Sheila Tate's family passengers #2-11 Maaler
This is the family of Nikuls Gundersen, a rosemaaler by profession. He is
believed to be the son of Gunder Tovsen Buine and Margit Torgrimsdatter
Homme. He married Groe Johannesdatter on 26 Jun 1828 in Kviteseid,
Telemark, Norway. Groe is the daughter of Johannes Asklaksson Sollid
and Aslaug Olavsdatter Skotbakkan. Nikuls contacted cholera and died
within two days after coming to Racine, Wisconsin. Two years later,
with two other widows and their children, also from Norway, Groe walked
across Wisconsin from Racine to settle in Trempealeau County. According
to son Gunder's obituary (died 26 Oct 1924) - "The day after they landed
in Racine, the father died from cholera. Gunder and John being the oldest
boys in the famly were immediately confronted with the duty of supporting
their mother and the younger children. Gunder found a job in Chicago which
netted him about seventy-five dollars for a season's services."
About the first day of June, 1854, Gro Gunderson (Grace Nichols in US),
with her children and several friends and relatives, left Racine, Wis. for
some undetermined point further west and north. When they came to
Black River Falls, they intended going farther north, but were turned
from their purpose by a conversation they had with a man whom they met
there, who gave a favorable account of Trempealeau Valley. Gunder was
the last living witness as to the incidents of this trip. He said that
the party he accompanied reached Mound Spring in the town of Springfield,
Jackson County, about July 15, 1854. The members of his family at that
time were his mother, Gro, his brothers, Johannes and Ole, and sisters,
Marget, Gunil, Ingeborg, Anna and Maria. All of these girls
became wives of men prominent in the early history of the community.
Marget married Knudt Storley; Gunil married John Tytegrav; Anna married
Alexander Matson; Ingeborg married H.A. Bright; and Marie married
Absolom Erickson. Gunder married Martha Torgersdatter; John/Johannes
married Hellen unknown; Ole married Mathilda unknown.
