Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder
not the transcriber or is used to call your attention to additional
information in the transcriber's notes below.
? The ? marks indicate letters or words that cannot be read due to the
quality of the original document.
^ The caret indicates the letter following is raised or superscripted.
* The original manifest numbered the Cabin Passengers from 1 to 11.
Then Steerage Passengers began with number 1 again. This formatter
has changed the numbering sequence to continue with number 12 for the
first Steerage Passenger, etc. for ease in following Transcriber's Notes.
* All passengers listed the intended destination as Baltimore.
Therefore this column was omitted.
* The column Died on Voyage listed no deaths. Therefore this column
was omitted.
* The accommodation column was omitted since only the first eleven
passengers were in the Cabin section. The rest were in Steerage.
* The column "transient or in transit" was used by the recorder to list
the final destination of each passenger.

transcriber's opinions on the abbreviated names.

Correspondence 04/21/01 passengers #646-651 Wilkerts
On October 5th, 1883 onboard the SS Strassberg were passengers
#646-#651. Passenger #646 is listed as "Valentin Wilkerts"
age 35 from Germany (my great great grandfather). With him is his wife,
Margarethe, age 34. Valentin and Margarethe were married on
February 9, 1867. Margarethe's maiden name is "Reinholtz". I have
her father listed as "Harm Reinholtz" but, no mention of her mother.
Valentine was from Plaggenburg, Ostfriesland born August 9, 1845.
Margarethe was born in Middels, Osterloch, Ostfriesland, July 14, 1848.
Tracing this family has shown many ways of spelling the last name.
Here it shows "Wilkerts" and I've seen "Weikerts" and "Wiekerts".
Grandma always said it was pronounced "Wickett".
On board with them is thirteen year old "Marie". My family records
show her being called "Mary" but we called her "Mamie". Mamie was
my grandmother's widowed Aunt. I was almost seven when she died in
1961. I can still remember her; a small, frail woman with her white
hair pulled back into a tight bun. She had married in 1891 to
William O. Cross and lived in Emden, Illinois. This is where the
family settled although according to the passenger list their
"intended destination or location" was Nebraska. Mamie and William
had no children although they reared a nephew and a grand-niece.
Mamie would stay the winters with my Grandmother. I can vaguely
remember Mamie's house; the summer heat with the shades pulled and
an occasional hot summer breeze would blow the crisp, clean and
starched lace curtains. She owned a pump organ which drew small,
curious children like a magnet. We were often scolded for playing
on it. William died in March of 1933. Mamie passed away in July
of 1961. She was the oldest member of the St. Peter's Lutheran
Church in Emden.
Next on the passenger list was "Johann", aged nine. I don't have
much information on "John Valentin" except for he was born on
July 3, 1873 in Plaggenburg. No date on when he married but, I
do know he married "Meta" or "Mattie" Rademaker in Emden, IL. He
died in November of 1946 in the town of Morris, in Grundy County,
Illinois.
The six year old listed next on the SS Strassburg was "Anna".
"Anna Margaret" was my great grandmother. She was born
January 30, 1877 in Plaggenburg. Anna married William Weis/Weiss
(?) on December 24, 1895 at the Community House in Emden, IL.
To this union were born three children: Margaret Sophie born in
1896, Clarice Marie born in 1899 (my grandmother) and William Valentine
born in 1901.
I have spent two years trying to find information on
William Weis!!! I began looking through passenger lists and this
is how I found Anna and her family. What a terrific surprize! I
have a copy of their marriage license and several different copies
of his obituary from several newspapers. I have a listing for
Weiss, Weisse and Wise but, Grandma said they pronounced it "Weese".
He died in 1904 after suffering sunstroke while watching a baseball
game on a Sunday afternoon. Death occured according to one account
6:30 Monday morning, another reads he died on Tuesday then another
says Wednesday. The day doesn't matter, although it sounds as if
he suffered terribly. All obits mention his leaving "a wife and
three small children" (one being my grandmother aged five). How sad!
One article I found says he is survived by "his aged mother in Nebraska".
Nebraska is mentioned again. Coincidence??? The facts I have on him
are, he worked as a bartender in H. Zimmerman's saloon in Emden. Anna
eventually re-married and William is buried next to her and her second
husband, Cornelius Alberts in the Bethel Cemetary. There is no
gravestone for William Weis. I often wonder if he was an immigrant,
too. I do have a copy of the only picture we have of him. The photo
shows a handsome man with dark features in a cowboy hat. Their
daughter Margaret married twice. First to a Wilbur Bailey and then
to a Thompson. I have no other information on Thompson. Margaret
died young also in 1931 after the influenza outbreak, leaving five
little girls. My grandmother married Roy Allen Singley in 1923 and
they had five boys (one being my father, Melvin E. Singley). Anna
had four more children with Cornelius Alberts.
The last Wiekert on the passenger list is "Hermine", aged 2.
Gretchen Hermina "Hattie" Wiekert was born on June 17, 1880. She
married Rutherford Hayes Laing or Uncle "Nim" as he was fondly known.
Three more Wiekert children were born in Emden, Illinois. They were
Harry Harm; born in 1884, Heio Jacob; born in 1886 and Lena Marie;
born in 1889. If you are researching this family, please contact
