Ship St Nicolas

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, John Bragdon, Master of the Ship St. Nicolas do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship St. Nicolas at Have from which port said ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex, and the occupation of each of said passenger, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belong, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the name and ages of these who died.

Column 7, Country in which they intend to inhabit is marked 
          United States throughout. 
Column 8, Died on Voyage is left blank.
Column 9, Section of vessel occupied is marked Upper Between
          except for last four pasengers which are listed as
          House on Deck.

* Passenger 22,23,24,65,87,88,100,103,123,132,144, Place of
            origin may be spelled Wartenberg, which may be
            located in a surburb of Berlin, Germany.
* Passenger 63,74,91,104,105, Place of origin may indicate
            Hessen.
* Passenger 101,102, Place of origin may indicate Swiss. 
* Passenger 30,78,81,103,134,136, given name of Marg, then
            the 'the' is written half a line above, indicating
            an abbreviated name.

Passenger   1 occupation translates to wood worker or 
              carpenter, place of origin may be Sardegna,
              Italy
Passenger   6 Last name could be Rappold. Occupation difficult
              to translate, may mean to Cut. Place of origin
              may be as written, meaning the Gr. Duches of Bade
              or may indicate Baden.
Passenger   7 occupation Fermier translates to farmer.
Passenger  22 Occupation Instituteur translates as an
              instructor or teacher.
Passenger  24 occupation Brasseur translates to brewer.
Passenger  25 acute accent over middle e in given name.
Passenger  26 surname may start with a F. occupation Boulanger
              translates to baker.
Passenger  27 occupation Cordonnier translates to cobbler or
              shoemaker.
Passenger  31 acute accent over e in surname, occupation may
              be one who turns,(lathe?)
Passenger  32 - 34, umlaut over u in surname.
Passenger  38 occupation Cordonnier translates to cobbler
              or shoemaker.
Passenger  40 - 44, surname may start with Y.
Passenger  43 acute accent over e in given name.
Passenger  53 acute accent over e in given name, occupation
              of Menuiser translates to woodworker or capenter.
Passenger  58 Place or origin may be as written, meaning the
              Gr. Duches of Bade or may indicate Baden.
Passenger  60 Surname may start with a Y. Occupation menuiser
              translates to woodworker or capenter.
Passenger  62 Surname may be Stoltz. Occupation confiseur
              may translate to confiserie which is a confection
              or candy maker.
Passenger  63 occupation of fermier translates to farmer.
Passenger  90 Surname may start with a J.
Passenger 100 umlaut over the u in surname
Passenger 108 acute accent over e in given name.
Passenger 110 Occupation Macon translates to Mason or
              bricklayer.
Passenger 111 - 116. First letter of surname very difficult to
              decipher, may start with C or W.
Passenger 117 Occupation Tourneur may translate as a turner,
              one who turns (lathe?)
Passenger 119 occupation Vitrier translates to a glazier.
Passenger 122 acute accent over e in given name.
Passenger 123 Occupation should be spelled Tailor.
Passenger 132 occupation Commercant translates to commercial
              shopping or a merchant.
Passenger 144 occupation Cordinnier translates to a cobbler
              or shoemaker.
Passenger 153 - 156 listed as #1,2,3,4 respectfully after
              House On Deck
Passenger 157 notation after listing that he was a stowed away
              and found after four days out. He was added to 
              the count of passengers so we may assume he was
              allowed to stay and not returned to Havre. 
              Notation after name may indicate place of origin
              or occupation, looks like Ausef. No other 
              comments made.

Captains count of passengers
         139 Between Deck, 
           4 House on Deck and 
          11 Children, plus 
           1 Stowed away for a 
total of 155.  

Transcriber count 
         152 Between Deck including children, 
           4 House on Deck, 
           1 Stowed Away for a 
total of 157.
