We have recently been given a silver ewer for our collection at the American
Museum. It has an engraved inscription on it from the passengers of a ship
to its Captain.
I thought you might be interested in the inscription on our ewer:

Engraved inscription on main body: "To Captain Josiah Macy / as a token of
esteem / from the passengers of the Silvanus Jenkins / December 1827"

This seems to fit with the crossing made by the Silvanus Jenkins from
Liverpool to NY on 30 November 1827.

Correspondence 08/18/2003 Captain Macy
The story of the Silvanus Jenkins (silvanusjenkins18271130) and Captain
Josiah Macy still appears to be unravelling and I thought you might like to
share in the further information that I have obtained!

After our discoveries on the web (thanks to your great website!) I was asked
by our librarian to write a short article for our magazine about our silver
ewer. By happy accident a Mrs. Barclay, who had recently donated a silver
tea set to our museum, read the article. Her family is also related to the
Macy's and she kindly sent us a transcripton of a letter written by Captain
Josiah Macy to his grandson about his sea faring days. In it he records the
last voyage from Liverpool to New York in November 1827, and includes the
names of some of the passengers:

"I continued in charge of the S. Jenkins steadily in the Liverpool trade
until 11th month, 1827....The ship was now running as one of the line of of
Liverpool packets. I had a very good freight home, and as many passengers
in the cabins as I could accomodate, among them was Albert Gallatin, his
wife and family (the American minister to Great Britain), Joshua Bates one
of the house of Baring Bros. & Co., of London with his family, ? Gear, a
branch of Bearing Bros. & Co.'s house in Liverpool, and many others. I
merely mention a few names to show that the Silvanus Jenkins was considered
a good safe ship to cross the ocean in; the passage was one of the most
boisterous ones that I ever made; but we were favoured to arrive safe
without any serious accident."

Again, I hope you find this information of interest.
Yours sincerely
