I, Thomas Hewitson, Master of the Steam Ship Samaria, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Port of Boston, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which ports said vessel has now arrived and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex, calling, country of citizenship, native country, intended destination or location, number of pieces of baggage, location of compartment or space occupied, and date and cause of death of passengers as required by the "Passenger Act of 1882"; also a true statement so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. Passenter Notes:
251: Although "Age" is listed as 4 years, "Calling" is listed as Servant. One of these
is obviously an error.
259: ?? either "ui" or "iu", thus Svegguim or Sveggium. Intended destination listed
as "Dakota" without North or South designation. (Note: North and South Dakota had become
the 39th and 40th states, respectively, on 12 November 1889, only 7 months prior to this
voyage.)
263: Surname possibly Wilund.
264: Given name may be Elna.
269-270 : Surname possibly Shar.
274: Surname possibly Matinsen.
279: First letter of surname unclear; name looks like Oflitnomala or
Glitmomala. Note similarity to surname of Passenger 192 on Page 1

433: Surname possibly Roche. Recorder's lower case "t's" are sometimes
extremely small.
442: Questionable letters of given name all small, without ascenders or
descenders. Could be something like Hamonds, for example.
449: Baggage number obscurred by ink blot.
463-464: Very dark streak across name. Questionable letters before "y" in
surname possibly "-the" or "-tle", i.e. M??they or M??tley, other letters
do not appear to ascend above or descend below the line.
463: First letter of given name may be an "E". 464: Age completely obliterated.

Correspondence 10/20/02 passenger #379 Ward
I have found who I believe to be my grandfather. He is listd as passenger # 379 on the
SS Samaria. Dep Queenstown, Ireland on June 11, 1890.
He settled in Pawtucket, RI and married Mary Sweeney. They had 9 children. I am
the daughter of James Ward, the youngest, and live in Rehoboth, MA
