Transcriber's Notes:
Captain's first initial could be J. or P. or T; surname looks
like Destebicko.
About half way through, at #34, another writer took over, and then the
first names and surnames were switched. Here on this transcription,
the same pattern will continue, with surnames first.
#2 first name probably Christine, but looks like Chrittine; in occupation
column, almost looks like butcher but seems to be lined out.
#4-6 no first names were recorded.
#5 age possibly 24.
#5 area for age is damaged.
#7 age could be 23 or 33.
#10 age possibly 41.
#12 surname does not seem to be dittoed, but is probably Monet.
#15 first name abbreviation looks like Amt. or Annt., probably for Antoine.
#18 surname could be Fauchon or Panchon.
#20 surname possibly Priour or Priond.
#22-23 surname seems to be Jean Marie, was written out in each line.
#24-26 uncertain if the surname was meant to be the same as previous at #23;
or if Guillaume was the surname as #21 apparently was. So surname could
be Jean Marie or Guillaume for these; or for #26, uncertain if Perrin
was the first name or surname.
#28 surname possibly Ledin or Ledire or perhaps Jean Marie as in those
at #22-23.
#29 says only "one child" in the area for names, possibly with #28.
#30 surname could be Priond or Prior or Prisor, perhaps is same as #20;
occupation probably farmer, possibly farrier.
#31 surname looks like Huard.
#32 surname could be Dulch or Duleh; occupation probably seamstress.
#34 looks like abbreviation f's for first name, perhaps for Francois.
#36 first name looks like Honeste; surname looks like Birfeldt.
#37 surname looks like Chenee or Chenec.
#38 surname Guirand or Guiraud; first name probably Jean Baptiste.
Perhaps surname is same as for #70-71.
#39 age could be 45 or 49.
#43 surname Leban or Lebau or Lebarr; or could be LeCau or LeCarr
or LeCan.
#44 surname could be Vandechamp.
#45 surname could be Lafond.
#46 presumably Frere was the surname and did not mean he was the brother
of someone nearby.
#47 surname looks like Dispan or Dispar or similar; first name
probably Pierre.
#61 surname Garrant or Gazzant or Gorrant or Gozzant.
#65 surname could be Mongiard or Mougiard or similar.
#66 surname could be Diesertrand or Dubertrand or Dusertrand or a variation.
#68 after her surname, it looks as if there is something written,
like F.clair or F.elain.
#69 surname looks like Dicord or Ricard.
#71 surname looks like Guirand or Guirard, but is possibly meant
to be the same as #70. Perhaps surname is same as for #3
#72 first name looks like Valim or Valun.
#73 surname could be Weills or Weilly or Weillz; age could be 43 or 45.
#74 surname looks like Herbauld.
#75 surname over-written; looks like Herzie?t, but cannot be
certain of all of it.
#76 presumably the surname was Armand, if the pattern was the same as
the others in this section.
Correspondence 4/2/01 passengers #52-56 Bel
My great-grandfather who was a Bel, and the Bels on this voyage of the
Salem, were from the same town, Facigney, Savoie, in France, though I
do not yet know the connection between him and these Bels. My great-
grandfather's name was Francois Bel; he married a Josephine Chevalley
in New Orleans. When he came to New Orleans I do not know. He was
born in 1819 in France. If anyone is researching these Bels, please
contact me. Katherine
