I, John Morehouse, Master of the RMS/S City of Paris do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on Board the said Steamer City of Paris at Liverpool from which port the City of Paris has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended ??? ???? to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died. # 5 - looks like a "J" or "G" and then one or two small letters.
# 10 - small letter, could be "r" or "s"
# 24 - either "5" or "8"
# 28,#29 - small letters, the first looks like "e" or "i", the second "d" or "r"
# 38 - could be a small letter or just an extra pen stroke
# 39 - small letter, could be an "o"
# 41 - The first ? extends below the line like a "j", the second ? is a small
letter.
# 47 - either "N" or "W"
# 49 - small letter, like "s" or "r"
# 55-#64 - Ditto marks were used in the column for sex. These passengers are
probably males as it would be unusual to see females as Lab and Mech
# 59 - two small letters, looks like "ee"
# 62 - two small letters, possibly "er"
# 63 - The first ? could be "u" or "y", the second ? could be "a" or "d". The
"y" in the name above extends down into the letters
# 64,#65 - If the ? in the name above is a "y", there is only one ? in the
beginning, a small letter possibly an "i". If it is not a "y", there
are two letters, could be "li". The last ? looks like an "r" with a
long tail.
# 70 - The first ? is a small letter like "e" or "i", the second could be "d"
without a tall upstroke, or it's a small letter.
# 71 - looks like "S" or "C"
# 78,#79 - "Child" is entered in the occupation column for passenger 78, this
is probably an error. There are ditto marks in the next entry, also
probably an error.
# 80 - "Lab" is entered in the occupation column, this is probably an error as
the passenger is 10 yrs old.
# 83 - Ditto marks were used in this column, either this entry or the
occupation "wife" is incorrect.
# 84 - Occupation "child" is incorrect as the passenger is 27 yrs old. Ditto
marks are used in the column for sex, unsure whether this is correct
or not.
# 85 - looks like "ou"
# 86 - Occupation "mech" is probably wrong as passenger is 8 yrs old.
#100 - probably a "9" but the lines are very thick and it's hard to be sure
#104 - may be another letter, there is a small upstroke after the "r"
#111 - two small letters, the first looks like "a" or "u". The second ? letter
is written over by the "g" in the line above, can't tell what it may be.
#117 - an extra line after the "r" that could be an "s"
#134 - two small letters, possibly "is" or "er"
#136 - There is an extra loop and upswing at the end that may be an "l" but is
smaller than the "l" before it.
#140 - two small letters
#150 - possibly "fe" although the first ? doesn't look like the "f" preceeding
it, looks like an "f" with a small top and very round bottom
#151 - a small letter like "e" or "i"
#153,#154 - Looks like "ie" or "ei"
#156 - two small upstrokes at the end, not sure if it indicates a letter or not
#161 - two or three small letters, the downstroke from "g" above makes it hard
to tell
#168 - the first ? is "e" or "a", the second ? looks like a big "s"
#169 - either "e" or "i"
#184 - possibly some combination of "e", "i", "r" and "c". Also, "wife" entered
in column for sex is a recorder error.
#193 - letter that extends below the line like "j" or "g"
#194, #195 - three or four small letters
#196 - one or two small letters, looks like "u", could be "er"
#204 - two small letters, could be "es"
#215-#221 - The first ? looks like "N" but not like other "N" on the manifest,
the second ? could be "r" or "s" at the end or just an extra penstroke.
#224 - The occupation "child" is probably incorrect as the passenger is 30
yrs old.
#226 - There is what looks like "I" followed by ditto marks in the column for
occupation.
#228 - looks like "os" with a line through it
#229 - looks like a small scribble, can't tell what letter it might be
#232 - the first two ?? could be "is" or "rs", the second ?? could be "re" or
possibly a "w"
#239,#240 - two small letters, possibly "er"
#247 - two or three small letters, possibly "een" or maybe "ew"
#251 - either a "t" or "b"
#258 - a small letter
#261,#262 - Ages were entered in the months column instead of the year column
(at the top of a new page), probably an error.
#263 - two small letters, could be "rs"
#265 - The first ? has the downstroke from the "J" above through it, could be
an "H". The next ?? are two or three small letters.
#269 - a small letter
#281 - a small mark at the end, could be an extra penstroke
#284 - two or three small letters, looks like "ero"
#291 - Possibly "S" but can't be sure
