Passengers #47 and 122 did not die on board although it appears like it on the
original copy from microfilm. The entire list appears to have been folded
before the ink was dry. This mark is a ghosted reversed symbol for one of
the two passengers who did die. In fact, all the names can be seen reversed
and ghosted in the right hand column.

Contributor's Notes:
This ship was one of five ships chartered by a group of Saxon Lutheran
emigrants under the leadership of Pastor Martin Stephan. One ship was lost
at sea. They settled in St. Louis and Perry County, MO. The story of this
emigration is detailed in the publication "Zion on the Mississippi" by Walter
O. Forster.
The passenger #16 was later to become the first Pastor of the Holy Cross
Lutheran Church at Cole Camp, Benton Co, MO where a growing settlement of
German Immigrants had settled.

The Bremen ship OLBERS was built at Vegesack/Grohn by Johann Lange for the Bremen firm of F. & E. Delius, and was launched on 1 October 1838. H. W. Exter, of Bremen, was her master for her entire career under the Bremen flag. Her maiden voyage was to New Orleans; among the passengers on this voyage were the "Old Lutheran" pastor Martin Stephan, from Dresden, and approximately 200 of his followers, who later settled in Perry County, Missouri [see, inter alia, Walter O. Forster, Zion on the Mississippi: The Settlement of the Saxon Lutherans in Missouri, 1839-1841 (St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1953)]. From 1838 to 1848, the OLBERS sailed exclusively between Bremen and North American ports. However, in August 1848, she arrived at Bordeaux, where she stranded entering the Garonne, breaking her keel. She then passed into French hands and was renamed first PERUANA, then, in 1849, after being purchased by the Bordeaux firm of Civrac ainé, ASTRONOME (probably an indication that the firm had some knowledge of Olbers and his contributions to astronomy). In 1853, the vessel was purchased by the Bordeaux firm of Ste. Aure Couperie, which owned her until at least 1856. Her masters under the French flag were F. Giteau and J. Dumoulin. I have at present no information on this vessel's later history and ultimate fate. In late 1838, a group of Saxon Lutherans under the leadership of Martin Stephan,
chartered five ships to take them to New Orleans. According to the Concordia
Historical Institute, the ships were as follows:
Ship Copernicus, departed Bremen 3 Nov 1838 and arrived in New Orleans
31 Dec 1838 (the manifest is dated 2 Jan 1839);
Ship Johann Georg, departed 3 Nov 1838 and arrived 5 Jan 1839
(the manifest is dated 7 Jan 1839);
Ship Republik, departed 12 Nov 1838 and arrived 12 Jan 1839
(the manifest is dated 14 Jan 1839);
Ship Olbers, departed 18 Nov 1838 and arrived 20 Jan 1839
(the manifest is dated 21 Jan 1839); and
Ship Amalia, departed Bremen 18 Nov 1838 but sadly, sank in the
Atlantic with all hands.
The Ships Copernicus, Johann Georg, and Republik are being transcribed and will be in Volume 6.
