Steamer Newport
I, John P. Sundberg, Master of the Steamer Newport, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of said vessel at Havana, Cuba, from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compart- ment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of luggage of each; also, a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. So help me God. John P. Sundberg.
Sworn to this 28th of May 1883 before me, M. Rockwell.

A second statement page follows this manifest on which Mr. Sundberg
wrote "CHINESE" underlined at the top, filled in his name but no
other blanks, and added these words after "So Help Me God": "and
the personal description of said passengers as shown by the
certificate in their possession." He also crossed out some of the
preprinted column headings and wrote in replacement wording for
them.
Columns for the Chinese manifest are as follows: Names, Age in Years,
Sex, Calling, Last Residence, Height, Complection, Location of
Compartment or Space Occupied, Physical Marks, and Eyes.
1 Pablo Paila 60 male Trader Cuba 5'5" Chinese Stge None Black
2 Atilano Galarraga 52 male Trader Cuba 5'6" Chinese Stge None Black
3 Narcio Galarraga 43 male Trader Cuba 5'6" Chinese Stge None Black
4 Nector Solano 33 male Trader Cuba 5'6" Chinese Stge None Black
5 Joaquin Garcia 35 male Trader Cuba 5'5" Chinese Stge None Black
Note: The passengers listed on the Chinese manifest are passengers
112-116 on the main manifest.
Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original
recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letter that could not be read, due
to quality of original document.
NOTE:The original recorder of this manifest used "Mcht" for "Merchant",
"Svt" for "Servant", "Asst" for "Assistant", and "Eng" for "Engineer".
Also, ages are given in years and months. It is important to read them
separately; otherwise someone x years and .5 months might be mistaken
to be x and one half years, rather than the correct x years and half
a month (2 wks).
