Transcriber's Notes:
* Asterisks indicate transcriber's notes.
? Question marks indicate illegible letters
^ Carets indicate missing letters followed by a superscripted letter or
letters.
* This was a Port of New York form with word "York" changed to "Orleans."
* Although the port declaration at beginning of manifest states that five
passengers died, the recapitulation at end of list states 3 adults and 3
infants died, and six passengers have death dates listed, all in November.
* The handwriting on this manifest is very indistinct and "loose" in style, in
that most a's, o's and g's are not closed at the top, and thus are identical
to the writer's u's and y's, and those options should be considered when
viewing the names.
* Although most Bremen lists have the original German spelling of names, this
list has anglicized them, eg Henry for Heinrich, John for Johann, Miller for
Müller, etc.

Correspondence April 29, 2002 passengers #141 & 144 Schlichting and Wintse
On the Ship Monmouth that left Bremen, Germany to New Orleans 23,
December 1853, passenger number 141, being Elizabeth Schlichting and
passenger number 144, being Andrew Wintse are my second great grand
uncle and grand aunt.
Andrew Wintse true and correct spelling of name is: Andreas Wintjen.
Elizabeth Schlichting was known by Elsebe Schlichting.
Here is their story, and quote from Andreas Wintjen's obituary:
Andreas Wintjen was born at Bremervorde, in the Province of Hannover,
Germany, June 5, 1827 and departed this life at his home 2-11-1911,
at the age of 83 yrs., 8 mo.'s and 5 days. At the age of 26 yrs.
old he bade goodbye to his native land and started for America taking
passage on a sailing vessel which left the Port of Bremen in 1853.
After a tiresome voyage of 7 weeks her arrived at New Orleans where
he stayed a short time. Renewing his journey he traveled northward
to St. Louis, Mo. where he remained four years. Early in the year
1856 he was united in marriage to Miss Elsebe Schlichting which union
was broken by the death of the wife and mother on October 7, 1873.
Unto them were born ten children; being: Catherine Elizabeth Wintjen,
Anna Maria Wintjen, John Henry Wintjen, Andreas Wintjen, Louisa Wintjen,
Peter Claus Wintjen, Claus Henry Wintjen, Louis Wintjen, Rebecca
Christina Wintjen and Gevert H. Wintjen.
Andreas Wintjen came to Calhoun County, Illinois in March of 1858
locating on an unimproved farm that he had previously purchased in
Belleview Precinct, Calhoun Co., Ill. where he resided until his
death. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this county and was
not spared the hardships and privations that fell to the lot of the
men of his day, who by their persistance and fidelity to duty were
instrumental in clearing the way for civilization and enlightenment
of the present day. At an early age he united with the Lutheran
Evangelical Church of which he was a member at the time of his death.
The above was written per original 1911 Calhoun Co., Ill. obituary,
of which I added all of the childrens name.
Peter Wintjen was my great-great-great-grandfather, and the brother
of Andreas Wintjen. Family story has it that Peter came over on the
Ship Monmouth the same time as Andreas, only as a stowaway.
Peter also settled and raised his family in Calhoun Co., Ill., being a close neighbor of Andreas.
Peter Wintjen married Elsebe Schlichting's sister, Catherine Schlichting.
