Ship Meta
I, Johann Jaburg, Master of the Bremen Ship Meta, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York,is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship Meta at Bremerhaven from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.
Sworn to this Sept 8/1857, before me [signature cannot be deciphered] So help me God, J Jaburg

Total Amount 225
Cabin Passengers 2
Second Cabin 49
Tweendecks 147 * Adults 23 Infants 3
Fore Castle 1
* Writer of list must be counting passengers on the "Tweendecks" as 147
men, 23 women, and 3 infants; but the numbers don't tally correctly, and
there is no passenger #52 because the list writer filled in that line with the
word "fore castle" followed by the passenger's name for the only passenger in
the fore castle.
Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
Some names of places of origin and their English equivalents are: Ungarn=Hungary,
Hessen=Hessia, Sachsen=Saxony, Böhmen=Bohemia, Preussen/Preuss=Prussia, Bayern=Bavaria,
Oestreich=Austria, Braunschweig=Brunswick, Polen=Poland,
Passenger Notes:
6 Surname difficult to decipher, looks like Kerauss, Knaerr or Knaess
8 Surname could be Langenbech
13 The country of origin originally had Hannover, which was then crossed through and
Missouri written above it.
20 Occupation is blurred or smudged--seems to begin with an "S" followed by
6 or 7 letters, the last two letters seem to be gh.
29-31 Surnames have an umlaut over the "u"
32 Surname could be Waffler
38 Surname may have an umlaut over the "o"
40-41 Surname may be either Haus or Hans
42 Last 2 or 3 letters of surname have been obliterated, may also be Noss???
45 Surname may be Sholaben or Shobaben
49-50 Surname may be Risch
52 Original list has line 52 entered as "Fore-Castle" That is then
crossed out and Fore Castle is written in sixth column. Thus there
is one passenger less than what is indicated by the original list numbering.
61-62 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
75-76 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
77 Occupation may be shoemaker.
83 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
84 Surname is overwritten by entries from above and below it--looks
like it may be Graum or Graun
85 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
90 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
118 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
122 Age has a figure in the month column but it is difficult to tell
what it is.
127 Age has a figure in the month column but it is difficult to tell
what it is.
144 Surname may be the same as passenger #143: Leipper
152 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
160 Age may be 38 or 48
165 Surname may be Rieger or Bieger
167 Surname may be Holgen, Wolgen, or Welgen
175 Passengers 175-186: The nationality looks like Preuss (Prussian),
but is not written clearly enough to say for sure. Wisconsin is spelled
Wiskonsin here as in another entry.
Also, the occupation seems to be Segar-Maker (cigar maker), but the
e and g are compressed, making the second and third letters somewhat
unclear.
187 Surname could be Janck or Jauck
189 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
198/199 Occupation unclear--looks like sparmaker or spanmaker
201 Given name has an umlaut over the "o"
202 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
203/204 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
204 Age of child has an entry in the month column, but the digit is unclear,
may be 9 mo.
206 Country or place of origin is blurred on the original and
indecipherable but it does not appear to be the same letters for the
above entry, which would appear to be the parent of the child.
208 Surname may be Weg, but the final letter appears to be a "y"
218 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
223 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" --Seems as though it is missing
an "r" thus making it Kruger (Krüger or Krueger)
224 Surname has an umlaut over the second "u"
225 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
226 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
