Ship Mermaid
Left Gravesend, England October 6 1868 Arrived Lyttleton, New Zealand January 8 1869 Captain Rose a ship of 1233 tons from London
The clipper Ship Mermaid, Captain ROSE, arrived in harbour yesterday morning from London, after a passage of ninety four days. A large party including his honour the superintendent Dr. Donald Rouse (health officer), and Captain Gibson (port officer), went down to her in the S S Mullogh and, on going alongside, they found that all were well on board.
The commissioners then inspected the ship and found everything in the most desirable order, and the ship a pattern of cleanliness, the single women’s compartment being especially neat. The commissioners expressed themselves highly satisfied with the whole of the arrangements throughout. We may observe that his honour took great interest in the inspection and listened to the replies to the questions asked by the commissioner.
There was no complaint made by any of the emigrants or the passengers. The Mermaid brings out several old Colonists. She had also on board a splendid short-horned cow, also some purebred Southdown sheep and eight Merino rams. Mr. McQuade, the purser brought out linnets, larks, blackbirds, canaries, goldfinches and also some purebred Cochin China fowls.
The ship left Gravesend at 1 am on October 6 and it had westerly winds down the channel. The line was crossed on November 9 and the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope was passed on December 4. The Snares were passed at 2 pm on January 5, and the ship was becalmed off Dunedin on the afternoon of Wednesday last and arrived as above.
