Ship Maryborough
Voyage of the Ship Maryborough
from Liverpool to Port Denison and Moreton Bay,
February to June 1865
Notes and Transcribed Lists by P J Vanden Berg, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
In the 1860's, James Baines' Black Ball Line was contracted by the Queensland Government to deliver free and assisted emigrants from the United Kingdom direct to Queensland. To accommodate the increasing number of emigrants for Queensland, many ships built in Canada and America were purchased, with some being renamed. One such vessel was the clipper Maryborough, purchased for the Black Ball Line in 1862. It made several voyages to Queensland from 1862 to 1869 and eventually was sold in 1870 (Stammers 1978).
On this voyage, the Maryborough departed Liverpool on 9 February 1865, and sailed direct to Port Denison [Bowen] in Queensland. After 100 days at sea, the Maryborough arrived at Port Denison on 20 May 1865 "with 432 passengers of all classes on board" (from Medical Report) and all of her cargo consigned to Brisbane [Moreton Bay]. The largest group of the steerage passengers was Irish. Due to the presence of typhoid fever on the ship, the Maryborough was quarantined for 11 days on arrival at Stone Island. On 1 June, the Police Magistrate for Bowen, Mr Pinnock, allowed the passengers to be conveyed to the mainland by boats, the whole operation lasting till late in the night (The Port Denison Times, 3 June 1865).
In The Port Denison Times of 3 June 1865, Captain E Davies reported as follows - "Left Liverpool 9th February; had strong head winds for four days while in the channel; on the 13th strong easterly gales sprung up and carried us out of channel; experienced fair weather to the equator, and crossed the line 18 days after leaving the channel; becalmed for 10 days halfway across the S.E. trades, and losing them had a good run to the parallel of the Cape; from thence to Cape Leeuin head winds and squally with rain, and from Cape Leeuin to Cape Otway strong N. winds; made a good run through Bass's Straits to Cape Howe, and strong N. and W. winds with heavy thunder, lightning and hail storms to Great Sandy Island; experience a fair wind from thence to Port Denison, arriving here on the 20th inst [May]."
In his medical report of the voyage, dated 23 May 1865, the Surgeon Superintendent, Dr Nathaniel Levett, said "the health of the ship on arrival had been especially good and very fair during the voyage", with "the first month of the voyage by far the most unhealthy". There were 10 births during the voyage, of which two were stillborn, and two of the infants died. During the voyage there were 20 deaths in total, and all but two were children. Seven of the deaths occurred from typhoid fever. The Surgeon Superintendent reported there were 154 cases of sickness during the voyage covering a wide range of conditions. Not included in this figure were "103 cases of debility among the children which were set right by a small extra amount of nourishment".
The State of Queensland came into being in 1859, and Northern Queensland was expanding rapidly. There was a desperate shortage of people and workers, and employment was plentiful for young and old. The arrival of the Maryborough had been keenly awaited and many improvements to the town and country had been made. The Maryborough was only the second ship to arrive direct from England; the first, the Wansfell, arrived 17 months earlier. Upon arriving in May, The Port Denison Times of 27 May 1865 reported "they [immigrants] will have an opportunity of becoming acclimatised before the hot weather sets in".
On the afternoon of 2 June, six of the crew appeared before the Police Magistrate, Mr Pinnock, for desertion. The Port Denison Times of 3 June 1865 listed their names as W Keefe, Edward Crogan, Hugh Brisbane, John Burn, Henry Cassidy and George Adams. All were sentenced to seven days imprisonment and the loss of the whole of the wages due to them.
Before his Worship the Mayor, and J A J Macleod, Esq., J.P., a case of assault was heard in the Bowen Police Court on 8 June 1865. The plaintiff was Patrick Mulloy, an immigrant passenger on the Maryborough, and the defendant was William Bodwin Griffiths, 3rd mate on the Maryborough. The alleged assault occurred on 27 May 1865. Other passengers, Patrick Walsh, James Thompson and James Nolan were called as witnesses, as was Dr Nathaniel Levett. The Port Denison Times of 10 June 1865, in describing the case before the court, reported "The Bench dismissed the case". Immediately following this, a second case of assault was before the court with Patrick Mulloy again as plaintiff, the defendant this time being Dr Nathaniel Levett. The Bench dismissed the case as the plaintiff failed to appear.
There being insufficient space available in the 10 June issue of the newspaper, The Port Denison Times of 17 June 1865 reported on a luncheon held to honour the Master of the Maryborough, Captain Davies. A number of gentlemen met at Mr Hart's Hotel on Wednesday, 7 June, to pay tribute to Captain Davies' ability as a navigator. He was the first to bring an immigrant ship to Port Denison by the proper course, inside the Great Barrier Reef and not across it, as was the case with the Wansfell.
As reported in The Brisbane Courier on 27 June 1865, the Maryborough departed Port Denison on 9 June 1865 and arrived in Moreton Bay on 25 June 1865.
The names of First and Second Cabin passengers were reported in The Port Denison Times on Saturday, 27 May 1865. Some of the passengers continued on to Moreton Bay and these were reported in The Brisbane Courier on Tuesday, 27 June 1865. Also, several families travelled to Brisbane in steerage and their identities are unknown. The large majority of all those who left Liverpool landed at Port Denison.

Crew
A list of the crew for the voyage was prepared on 7 February 1865 at the port of departure, Liverpool, signed by the Master and the Surgeon of the Maryborough, and the Emigration Officer for the port. The list is on microfilm at the Queensland State Archives. The microfilm also forms part of THE QUEENSLAND PUBLIC RECORDS HISTORICAL RESOURCE KIT, widely available throughout Australia at State and other libraries, and some of the genealogical organisations.
Passengers in Steerage
On the same microfilm referred to above, there are four pages containing the names of 'free' passengers and one page of 'assisted' passengers departing Liverpool. Each individual passenger or family has been given a number, its meaning not identified on the documents. One of the columns on the documents has not been transcribed. Its heading is ENGLISH STATUTE ADULTS meaning that children below a certain age are not counted as passengers. Another column, headed QUEENSLAND ADULTS, has no entries and has also been omitted.
In transcribing these lists, no attempt has been made to change or correct spelling. Certain short-form given names have been expanded in the interests of clarity. In the crew list, some names have been crossed out and their fate is unknown. However, all names on the list have been included in the transcription. Names of passengers mentioned in the newspapers of the day are as reported in the newspapers.

Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk is used to call your attention to additional information in the
transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
* The formatter has added passenger numbers; there were none on the original
manifest.
* In the passenger lists, you will notice from the text under 'Passengers in
Steerage', changes I have made during the transcription. As mentioned in the
text, there is no identification for the number associated with individuals
or family groups. I believe it could be associated with numbers leaving
particular ports in the UK but I am not sure of that fact.
* The only other thing I have done in the transcription is to 'fill in' the
surnames where families are involved. The original lists contain only the
surname adjacent to the number for families.
Passenger Notes:
#3,#7, & #21 - Name crossed out.
#29, #37 - In the Crew list, there are two names whose place of birth could not
be worked out and I have included a '?'.
