Transcriber's Notes:
* On the first page is a note: 60 adults, 11 children, 5 Chinese.
Passenger Notes:
#1 One of the main developers of the sugar industry in Hawaii was
Claus Spreckels who was born in Lamstedt, Germany, in 1828.
He has been spotted on at least one other list, with his wife
and family, traveling to Hawaii from San Francisco in the 1880's.
Spreckels became a major landholder on the island of Maui,
as well as a sugar refiner. The servants are probably with the
Spreckels family, including #8, though I have not determined
who #8 is.
#9 the first word is probably Senator, but is badly written.
#12 surname looks like Wemer, perhaps it could be Werner, but looks
like Wemer; first name as found.
#13 surname looks like Flowerden or Flowerdeu or similar.
#31 no first name recorded.
#48 surname could be Taylor or Laylor.
#56 first initial is overwritten, not sure if it is F or T.
#63 surname looks like Suguy or Sufeey or Sugeey or Suzeey.
#66 there is a large ink drop there, can only say it could be
two letters that are covered by it, or maybe only one.
#72-76 it was not clear which is the surname for these passengers.
For example, Kai may not be the surname, though Lo seems to be a
surname in Chinese. Hong is a surname. Could not locate Way as
a surname, but found Lai, though not Lei. Tong and Long are both
surnames. Chew is a surname, did not find Chung, but a Cheung.
They are transcribed here in the order they are on the original
and as I am not very familiar with Chinese surnames, will leave it
to the researcher to determine which is which.
#74 name could be Long or Tong.
Correspondence added 12 March 2007, passengers 37-39 LANSING
Theodore F. Lansing was my great grandfather and Nelson B. Lansihg was
my grandfather. My mother, Roberta Lansing, was born in Hawaii in 1918.
Theodore was a member of the Committee of Safety (Hawaii) which planned and
executed the coup d'etat that overthrew the monarchy of Queen Lili'uokalani on
17 January 1893. For more information search "Theodore F. Lansing". Both Theodore
and his son Nelson died in Hawaii. James Lansing Quinan
