Transcriber's Notes:
* An * (asterisk) indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not
the transcriber or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the Transcriber's Notes below.
? The use of a ? (question mark) indicates letters or words that could not be
read due to the quality of the original document.
* The country to which they severally belong has Germany written in large
script vertically on every page and that column has been eliminated.
* The Country in which they intend to become inhabitants has United States
written vertically on every page and that column has been eliminated.
* There were no deaths recorded and that column has been eliminated.
* Part of the vessel occupied by each passenger during the voyage has Between
Decks written vertically on every page and that column has been eliminated.
* The passengers were numbered on the original list.
* The birth of two babies on this voyage are shown with their individual
mothers.
# 1 - Gust. Pa?tan - The third letter of the last name may be a u or a n. This
passenger last name could be either Pautan or Pantan.
# 2 - Frederika Pa?tan - The third letter of the last name may be a u or a n.
This passenger last name could be either Pautan or Pantan. Also, this is
listed as a male and also as wife of Passenger #1. It is reasonable to
assume Frederika is female.
# 3 - Ernst Pa?tan - The third letter of the last name may be a u or a n. This
passenger last name could be either Pautan or Pantan.
# 6 and #7 are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #4.
# 12 - E????? Stromeyer - There are five or six letters in question and all are
above the line. The second letter could be a 'u' or a 'n' and the rest
are unclear. The 5th letter could be 'l' or 'h'.
# 16 - a notation is made in the Age column that this passenger is the mother
of a male baby born on the voyage. No name is given to this child.
# 17,#18,#19,#20 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets as children
of Passenger #15.
# 41 - Aug. Wolfra? - the last letter of the last name may be a 'm' or an 'n'.
or Wolfram or Wolfran
# 46 and #47 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #44.
# 50, #51, and #52 are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children
of Passenger #48.
# 59 - Ernestine Bo??kessel - There are a couple of different possibilities
with this last name. It may be Bourkessel or Bormkessel.
# 63,#64,#65,#66,#67 and #68 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets,
as children of Passenger #61.
# 69 - C. Gut?man - the questionable letter may be either a 'g' or a 'z' for
Gutgman or Gutzman.
# 73,#74 and #75 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children
of Passenger #72.
#83,#84 and #85 are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #81.
# 89 - Caroline Her????? - the first three letters of the last name are pretty
certain but what follows is very dark with only a few curves to be made
out. It could be Hersmiam, Herriman, Hersaiam.
# 90 - Jos. Ble? - The copy is very dark and ther appears to be only four
letters for the last name. The last letter may be 'i' or 'u' for Blei or
Bleu.
# 94,#95,#96,#97,#98,#99,#100 and #101 - Ciser? - The last letter of the last
name may be 'e' or 'o' for Cisere or Cisero.
# 96,#97,#98,#99 and #100 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as
children of Passenger #94.
#102 - Chr. J???ker - The last name may be comprised of 6 or 7 letters. All are
above the line. The second letter has 'filled in' and may be either 'a'
or 'u'. Two possible names are Jansker or Junker.
#103 - Johna. J???ker -The last name may be comprised of 6 or 7 letters. All
are above the line. The second letter has 'filled in' and may be either
'a' or 'u'. Two possible names are Jansker or Junker.
#104 - Johna. Mat?ken - The fourth letter could be a 'g' or a 'z' for Matgken
or Matzken. This passenger is listed as male and unmarried. Young men
are not noted as unmarried on this list so this passenger is most likely
female.
#107 - G??? Riedel - First name is comprised of 4 or 5 letters. Looks like
Gottl - the 'l' may be a flourish and not a letter.
#107,#108,#109, and #110 are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as
children of Passenger #105.
#112 - Samuel Hoh?isch -This last name could be either Hohusch or Hohrisch.
#116 - Franziska B?ck - Second letter is 'e' or 'a' for Beck or Back.
#119 - Marie Beh??ke - Last name may be Behrike or Behnke
#121 and #122 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #120.
#142 - Johna. Mut?ma? - The 4th letter is either a 'g' or a 'z' and the last
letter 'm' or 'n'. Name could be Mutgman, Mutgmam, Mutzman, or Mutzmam.
#151,#152,#153,#154,#155 and #156 - are listed in Occupation column with
brackets, as children of Passenger #149.
#170 - Jacob J??n -Looks like Jhrn, Jhur.

Heinemam.
#176 - A Emmond??n - Last name may be Emmondien or Emmondsen
#190 - Armand Ma??ko - Last name is very dark and the 3rd and 4th letters are
strictly guesses; the whole of the mame is above the line and could
possibly be Maciko, Mareko, Maseko.
#191 - W. G???????? - This entire line is very dark. I'm fairly sure of the
first initial "W" and first letter of last name as "G", 4th letter may
be 'd' or 'l' - the rest is impossible to make out.
#192 - ?. Scharlinski - First initial could be 'J', 'I' or 'S'.
#193 - ?. Weichman - First initial could be an 'L'.
#194 - Carl Sa???nier - This line is dark and the letters of the last name are
small and indistinct. Possibly: Sassinier or Sannier. Note, however,
that what looks like a double 'ss' to this transcriber is not consistent
with the leading 's' used for other passengers on this list.
#196 and #197 are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #195.
#201 - Chris?. Marcussohn - There is what may be a very short letter 't' at end
of first name.
#211 and #212 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #209.
#216 - Didr. Paeto? - Last initial may be 'n' or 'w' for Paeton or Paetow.
#218 - Johs. S?iehler - It looks like there was a slip of the pen while writing
this second letter and it resembles a lower case 'l' with a bump at the
bottom. However, neither does it look like it could be an attempt at any
other letter. Name may be Sliehler.
#219 - Wilhelmina S?iehler - It looks like there was a slip of the pen while
writing this second letter and it resembles a lower case 'l' with a bump
at the bottom. However, neither does it look like it could be an attempt
at any other letter. Name may be Sliehler.
#222,#223, and #224 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as
children of Passenger #220.
#226,#227,#228,#229,#230,#231,#232,#233 and #234 - are listed in Occupation
column with brackets, as children of Passenger #225.
#237 Chole? Fass - Last letter of first name may be a 'n'.

Passenger #239.
#258 and #259 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #256.

passenger is the mother of a male baby born on the voyage. No name is
given to this child.
#288 - Cath. Krohn - Sex listed as male, Occupation: woman. As name appears to
be abbreviation of some form of Catherine, sex should probably be
female.
#303 and #304 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #302.
#310,#311 and #312 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children
of Passenger #308.

children of Passenger #313.
#330 and #331 - are listed in Occupation column with brackets, as children of
Passenger #328.
Correspondence 06/25/02 regarding German names etc.
I refer to the Passenger List of Ship Main. For a native German speaker,
some of your troubles with misspelled or illegible names seem easily to
solve. May I suggest some names out of your list?
# 41 There is no Wolfran in German. Likely is Wolfram
# 59 Bornkessel was a common name, perhaps in this case it was written
Bormkessel, but surely not Bourkessel
# 69 There is no name with „tg“ in German. Likely is Gutzman (with the
z underline). Please be aware of the common spelling in those times
of n with a line above as double n, so it would be Gutzmann
(from originally Gutsmann). The latter applies to many of the names
in the said list, it has to be often „-mann“ instead of „-man“
# 89 So this name could be Herrmann, a very common name
# 90 Blei is more likely than Bleu; the latter would be a French name
# 94 f. If these people came from a country with Slavonic language, the name
may be Ciser or Ciserc with a so called „Hacek“; Cisar would be a
common Czech name
# 102/3 Junker is more likely
# 104 see #69. Matzken is more likely
# 107 The first name may be Gottlieb and abbreviated Gottl.
# 112 I would suggest Hohnisch
# 116 Beck is more common
# 119 Behnke is more likely
# 142 see # 69. Most likely is Mutzmann (or it could be Muthmann)
# 169 f.Most likely is Heinemann, a common name
# 201 Here I am concerned, because my family name is Marcussohn. But I
am the first (so far known) who had been baptized, and a Jewish
person would not bear a name beginning with „Christ..“
# 218 f.I am pretty sure the name is Stiehler
Nr. 88 Could this be Grinbaum or Grienbaum instead of Grimbaum?
Nr. 159/60 Could this be Moeller (spelled Möller)?
Nr. 184/5 Could this be Andersdorf(f)er?
Nr. 188 In case this is not a English or American citizen, the name
has to be Bueschke (or Büschke)
Nr. 236 Could this be Krueger (spelled Krüger)?
Nr. 313 The first name of the father could be Asmus(s), the family
name can’t be Shuck if German (Schuck would be possible, Schock
more common)
