I, Henry Tibbits, Master of the City of London do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said steamer at Lpool from which port the said Steamer has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said Passenger, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.

Correspondence 6/9/2003 passenger #135 Bigbe/Boyle
Although 2 transcribers see this name as written Bigbe - we are changing
it due to the correspondence below.
My great grandmother Sarah Boyle was on this ship and she was passenger
number 135 noted on page 1. The original transcriber has her noted as
Sarah Bigbe. I feel that Bigbe is incorrect. The handwriting of the
person who made the passenger list in October 1870 noted Mary Boyle
was pax no. 67. The last hand written name, from the original passenger
list, for pax no. 135 matches that of Mary Boyle, number 67 or Boyle.
The timing was right for Sarah Boyle to be on this ship. Age given
listed is 19 on pax. list and that was about right. Five days later
she married my great grandfather, William Mulholland, in New York City
on October 16th. I have the Church certificate. Wm. Mulholland came
over a few months earlier from Belfast, Northern Ireland and found a
place to live in Manhattan, set himself up as a shoemaker, scheduled
the wedding and sent for Sarah. Her parents would not allow her to
marry William Mulholland in Ireland as she was from a rich Protestant
family and he was Catholic. Finding her on this list has filled a void
for my family's history. She was my mother's maternal grand mother.

I would estimate her age in the photo about 50 so the picture was
probably taken about the year 1900. The second photo is of the
Mulholland family in the mid to late 1880's, click here - Mulholland Family
From left to right in the photo are Anna Mulholland, William Mulholland
- Sarah's husband, my grandmother Mary Gertrude Mulholland who is the
infant in the middle, Elizabeth Mulholland and Sarah Boyle Mulholland.
Since my grandmother Mary G. Mulholland was born in December 1884, I
estimate that this photo was taken around late 1886 or 87. The last
photo is my great grandfather, William Mulholland, click here - Mulholland Wm.
I estimate that his age in this photo is also about 50 so I would
estimate that it was taken about 1900 as well. After working as a
shoemaker he worked for the City of New York as a dock inspector on
New York City piers. Shortly after 1900 the Mulholland Family lived
for many years at 156 East 48th St. in Manhattan, New York City.
Sarah died in April 1922 and husband William passed away in December 1928.
They are buried at Calvary Cemetery, Borough of Queens, in New York City.

SS City of London departed Liverpool on September 29th, 1870. It arrived
at Queenstown, Ireland on September 30th. Queenstown is present day Cobh
(pronounced Cove) and in the City of Cork Ireland's harbor. Cobh is on
an island in the harbor. The city of Cork is on the south eastern coast
of Ireland. I checked an Irish travel book and it stated: "Between
1848 - 1950 almost six million people emigrated from Ireland - two and
a half million people leaving from Cobh."
The NY Times article from 1870 then described the different ships it
encountered after it left Ireland and at what latitude and longtitude
the positions were. I would imagine the majority of the Irish on-board
the vessel boarded it at Queenstown. I was just curious to the total
time it took to cross the ocean in 1870. It was 13 days from Liverpool;
and 12 days from Queenstown.
