Transcriber's notes:
* The use of an * indicates a name that is unreadable as
written by the original recorder or unreadable due to
condition of original film.
? The use of a ? indicates letters that could not be read
due to the handwriting of the original recorder.
* No deaths or births were recorded on this voyage.
* The formatter abbreviated United States as US in the
"Country of citizenship" column to conserve space.
* The "Refrigerator Men and Cattlemen" and "Stowaway"
sections were originally numbered beginning again
with #1. The formatter has renumbered these sections
so that the entire list is numbered consecutively for
ease in referring to the transcriber's notes.

Correspondence 05/30/01 passengers #72-75 & 197 WEINSTEIN
Hello, and thank you for transcribing this list!
On it are passengers #72-75, and #197, all members of the Weinstein
family (I think #197's surname is probably "Weinstein" as well, rather
than "Feinstein"...), including #73 -- Jacob Weinstein, age 11, from
Russia. I believe Jacob to be my husband's great-grandfather, born
in 1878 in Vilna, Russia (now Poland). Jacob eventually settled in
Troy, New York, where he died in 1941. He was a merchant who speculated
on Florida real estate and unfortunately went broke during the Depression.
He had a number of children, one of which was Isadore Joseph Weinstein,
my husband's maternal grandfather.
Finding Jacob and his siblings on the passenger list you transcribed was
very helpful to me, in that my husband's mother died when he was 16, and
with her, much of the information about her family history. Previously,
the only early Weinstein name we knew was Jacob's, but this list has
helped to correct that.
Perhaps the most interesting bit of information gleaned from this list,
however, is the name of the ship captain, Alexander Fenton. In the 1940s
when my husband's parents married, his future father's original surname was
"Feigenbaum." However, his mother insisted on a name change before the
marriage, choosing "Fenton" as the new surname. No one knew where she got
that name, since "Fenton" was not the name of any "blood kin." Perhaps,
however, Alexander Fenton's name had made its way into her family folklore,
as being the one who delivered her grandfather from whatever horrors and
hardships the family might have suffered in their native Russia, to a new
home in America, the land of peace and prosperity. Perhaps that was how she
came to choose "Fenton" as her new surname, even if she did it unconsciously.
I guess we will never know, but it certainly is quite a strange coincidence,
at the very least!
I thought you might be interested to know that your transcription has
perhaps solved one of the greatest "history mysteries" in our family!
Thanks again.
