Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder or
comments about the look of the transcribed section.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letter(s) that could not be read, due to quality
of the original document.
*This ship was transcribed on the Mormon Immigration CD, and a copy of this information
was available for my use. As I did my transcription, I compared what I read with the
CD transcript and have noted any discrepancies in the information on the manifest.
Note that the CD transcript also has additional information about the ship, the passage
and the origin of most passengers. Most of the information on the CD transcript has
'BMR (British Missionary Records)' listed as the source.
*The last column was originally "Number and Names of Passengers who have died on the Voyage".
309-312 Baggage is centered between these 4 passengers.
313-314 CD transcript has last name as Weatherstone, but there is no 'a' in the manifest.
Baggage is aligned more with Charlotte (#314).
315-318 Baggage is aligned more between #317 and #318.
319 CD transcript has last name as HARRISON, but 6th letter ascends, making it a 'd'
and the 7th letter is not 'o', but 'e'.
320-325 Baggage is aligned low but seems to be bracketed around all 6 passengers.
326 CD transcript has name as MINCHER and age as 31, but the 2nd i is clearly dotted,
the last two letters are clear, and 51 is clearly written.
329 Baggage is misaligned, it is unclear if this family had 1 or 3 packages or
if the number of packages was omitted.
332-334 Baggage is misaligned from earlier rows, but the 3 packages lines up best
with this family.
335 CD transcript has middle initial as H., but letter is not like any of the other H's
on the page and looks more like this writer's 'K'.
335-339 CD transcript has last name as KINDRED, but first letter does not look like K
in #335's middle initial, but more like a modern capital 'A' with a thin upstroke
and thick downstroke. however, this writer's other 'A's are rounded. Baggage is
unreadable and bracketed around all family members.
342-345 Baggage is listed near this family's daughters.
346 Age looks like 40, but is too faint to be certain. Baggage may be for either
passenger 346 or 347.
347 CD transcript has last name listed as BUSHBY or PRUSHBY, but BUGBY is clearly written.
Baggage may be for either passenger 346 or 347.
350-352 CD transcript has last name as TEASDELL, but it is clearly written TEASDALE.
Baggage is centered near Ruth (#351).
353 CD transcript has last name as WOLSTENHOLME, but there is another letter between the
'o 'an the 'l', and there is no final 'e'.
356 CD transcript has middle name as Nephi, but initial on manifest is 'M'.
358 CD transcript has occupation as Bootmaker but Shoemaker is clearly written.
Baggage is written as if it could be for 357, but is more likely for this family.
365 CD transcript has name as Moroni, but it looks more like Thomas, like passenger 362.
Last letter is rounded and not dotted. Child is listed as Female due to ditto marks.
Another person read the first name as possibly 'Morino... but it doesn't look like
Moroni.'
367 CD transcript has occupation as Anchor Smith, but only Smith is written on transcript.
367-371 CD transcript has last name as ROBSON, but it is clearly written ROBINSON.
Baggage is bracketed around all 5 passengers.
370 CD transcript has name as Thomas A, but initial is clearly P.
371 CD transcript has name as W.F.S, but middle initial is clearly 'J'.
373 CD transcript has last name as JUNES. Although the writer did not quite close the
second letter, it looks like s/he tried to do so--making the name look more like JONES.
374-376 Baggage is listed near these three passengers, but isn't bracketed.
377-378 CD transcript has last name as Telford, but Selford is clearly written.
Baggage is listed near Robert, but is not bracketed.
378 CD transcript has first name as Anna, but Hannah is clearly written.
379 No packages are listed for this passenger.
380-386 Baggage is bracketed around all 7 passengers.
387 CD transcript has last name as NESHAM, but there is clearly an 'a' after the 'e'.
Following the 'a' there appears to be a flourish before the 's'. It is possible
that it is an 'r', making NEASHAM or NEARSHAM possibilities.
388 CD transcript has age as 50, but 53 is clearly written.
388-389 Baggage is bracketed around both passengers
390 CD transcript has last name as GARDENER, but the first 'e' is not evident.
No occupation is written, but CD transcript has Elias as a Farmer.
391 CD transcript has 3 listings for Enoch HIRST, age 31, stone mason,
with 3 different origins listed: Hincliffe Hill, Huddersfield, and South Shields.
The Huddersfield and South Shields entries indicate "Listed on the Juventa
[1855]. . .'Crossed out'". This entry was not crossed out on the manifest.
391-392 Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
392 Second digit looks like 7, but could be 1 or 9.
394 CD transcript has middle initial as H, but it looks like A.
395-397 First 2 (or maybe 3) letters appear to be either 'Sti' or 'Su' or 'Ju' making the last
name Stisey, Susey or Jusey--none of which are listed on the CD transcript.
396 Second digit of age looks like 9, but could be 1, 7 or 9.
398-403 Baggage is bracketed around all 6 passengers.
404 CD transcript has age as 29, but 27 is clearly written.
407 Number of Packages is too dark to read.
408 CD transcript has occupation as Plumber & Glasier, but only Plumber is written.
408-411 Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
413 Age was recorded as 3-1/2 but changed to 3y 6mos for consistency
414 CD transcript has last name as DAVIES and occupation as Spinster, but DAVIS and laborer
are clearly written.
416 CD transcript lists this passenger as Andrew HODNETT, but last letters look like 'L's.
They are not crossed.
417 CD transcript lists this passenger as William BEARD, all that is written is
W (a long space) Beard.
417-421 Baggage is bracketed around all 5 passengers.
419 CD transcript has age as 20, but 21 is clearly written.
420 CD transcript has age as 18, but 19 is clearly written.
421 CD transcript has age as 8, but 9 is clearly written.
422 CD transcript has this passenger as Josiah PEAT. There is no dot over any letter in the
first name, this writer tended to dot 'i's heavily, so the first name could be Jonah.
422-423 Baggage is listed for both passengers (no brackets).
424-425 Baggage is listed for both passengers (no brackets).
426-427 CD transcript has last name as DAVIES. There is no 'e' in the name.
428 CD transcript has last name as HOLT, but 'l' is too short, 't' is not crossed. Name
definitely looks like HOCH.
431 CD transcript has this passenger as James BURRISTON, but the letter preceding the 's'
is clearly an 'a' and the secondletter is dotted BIRRASTON.
432 CD transcript has this passenger as R.J., Jr. Baggage is listed near this passenger's
row--it is unclear if it is intended for him alone or also passenger 431 and/or 433.
435-436 Baggage is listed for both passengers.
439-441 Baggage is listed for all three passengers.
441 CD transcript has first name as Anne.
442 CD transcript has this passenger as Ruth WYLLIE, but Wiley is clearly written.
443 CD transcript has this passenger as James McKIE, but McKee is clearly written.
443-447 Baggage seems to follow passenger 444, but there are no brackets, 443 is likely
not included in this grouping, but has no separate baggage listing.
445 CD transcript has age as 21, but 22 is written.
451 CD transcript has this passenger as Edwin SPENCER. This is likely, although the
'C' is too faint to read. CD lists occupation as 'Frame work', but 'Knitter' is
clear. The first word looks like 'For.' or 'Fr.', so Frame would be possible.
452 CD transcript has this passenger as James HARDY, but HARDIE is written.
Occupation listed a 'Ditto'--CD lists occupation as 'Frame Knitter'.
453 CD transcript has this passenger as Alexander ECKFORD.
453-455 Baggage (2) seems to be aligned with daughter Jane--no brackets.
453-457 Baggage (4) seems to be aligned with daughter Agnes-no brackets.
459-462 CD transcript has last name as MOLLETT, but second 'T' is not written.
Baggage for family appears to be listed with baby Selina (no brackets).
463-467 CD transcript has last name as BELTON, but the second letter appears to be dotted
(or there the dot may be just an errant mark on the page) so it could be BILTON.
464 CD transcript has this passenger as Hannah BELTON. See prior note re: last name.
Re: first name, there appears to be space enough for Hannah, but only the
first 3 letters and possibly one additional letter are visible.
469-470 CD transcript has last name as PADLEY, but PEDLEY is clearly written.
471-475 Baggage is for all 5 passengers (family continues on next page of manifest).
476 CD transcript has this passenger as Charles Lyon, but name is written across top
line of new page and is too faint/unclear at the end to read. It could easily
be Charles. Baggage may be listed for #477 but is not aligned well with either.
477 Baggage listed under 476 may be associated with this passenger--it is not clearly
aligned.
480 CD transcript has has passenger's name as Thomas BALL, occupation as Butcher
and age as 22, but BALLE, Gardner and 27 are clearly written. Baggage alignment
is unclear, could be associated with 479, but makes mores sense with 480.
483-485 CD transcript has has last name as MAIDEN, but if so, the 'i' is not dotted as
usual for this writer and the 'i' is too wide. Baggage appears to go with this
family, but alignment is unclear.
485 CD transcript has passenger as Sarah Ann MAIDEN, but only initials are written
and gender is written as "M". See Note above Re: last name.
486 CD transcript has passenger's occupation as Frame Work Knitter.
487 CD transcript has passenger as James MARSDEN, but there is no 's' present in the
last name. Re: the first name, James is possible, but see note below. Mark(s)
makes 3rd letter look like it descends, but definitely looks like there may have
been an 'm' underneath.
487-488 There appears to be a errant mark over some of the letters for these two
passengers, making them unclear.
488 See note above and for 487, also CD transcript has passenger as Eliza MARSDEN,
age 27, name is likely but age is clearly 23.
489 See note for 487, CD transcript has passenger as Charles Thomas MARSDEN.
493 CD transcript has passenger as Elizabeth STEWART, but only initial of first name
is written.
494-496 Baggage seems to be aligned with this family.
495 CD transcript has passenger as Sarah ROBINSON, but only initial of first name is
written.
496 CD transcript has passenger as John Brown ROBINSON, but only initial of middle name
is written.
500 CD transcript has passenger as Levina RISTE, but 2nd letter of 1st name has a descending
tail as an 'a' rather than an ascending tail as an 'e'.
501 Baggage is aligned with youngest of this family, but appears to refer to entire family.
505 CD transcript has passenger as Thomas RINMERS, but middle two letters appear to both be
'm's, with no final 's'-making the name RIMMER.
506 CD transcript has passenger as George MAYER, but 2nd letter has an ascending tail as
an 'e' (See also note for #500).
507 CD transcript has passenger as Elizabeth J. WHITEHEAD, but only initials are written
508 CD transcript has passenger as Adolphus R. WHITEHEAD, but only initials are written,
and 2nd initial looks more like 'K' than 'R'.
510 CD transcript has passenger as age 3, but 6 is clearly written.
511 CD transcript has passenger of this age and occupation as Charles WHITEHEAD, but
George is clearly written for both this passenger and #510.
512 CD transcript has passenger as Ruth GREENAWAY, but there appears to be only one letter
after the 'n', either an 'm' or a 'w' making last name either GREENWAY or GREENMAY.
515 CD transcript has passenger's occupation as Sawyer, but manifest dittoes prior occupation
(Laborer).
515-521 CD transcript has last name for these passengers as RACE, middle two letters are very
faint, last name could be RACE, RASE, ROCE or ROSE.
518 CD transcript has passenger as William Vest RACE, but only initials are written.
525 CD transcript has passenger as Margaret Ann VEST. Gender is dittoed from prior
passenger (M), but would be 'F' if CD is correct.
526 CD transcript has passenger as Hyrum VEST, but Hiram is written.
527 CD transcript has passenger as Mary Elizabeth VEST. See note on #525 for gender comment.
529 CD transcript has passenger's last name as EARL, but there is a final 'e'.
530 Name is dark, on a crease and hard to read. Last name looks like Shelson or Shelemon.
CD transcript has John E. Sheldon.
535-537 CD transcript has last name as HIRROCKS, however 2nd and 3rd letters are clearly 'or'.
Name is written like passengers 542 & 543 which the CD transcript has as HORRICKS.
6th letter is either 'K' or 'H', CD transcript has 'k', but manifest looks more like
an 'h' but is unclear, thus name is either HORROCHS or HORROCKS.
538 CD transcript has occupation as laborer, but nothing is written on this manifest.
541 CD transcript has last name as CHISNALL, and occupation as wheelwright, no occupation
is listed on manifest.
542-547 CD transcript has last name listed as HORRICKS. See also note for 535-537. Baggage is
aligned with 10 month old Peter #547.
543 CD transcript has age as 57, but 37 is clearly written.
548-549 CD transcript has last name listed as OSTLER, but OSTER is clearly written, with
Sr. and Jun. added respectively.
551 CD transcript has occupation as Brass Founderer, but only Founder is written on the
manifest.
554 CD transcript has Joseph H. T. WILSON, but only the 'H' is written.
563 CD transcript has Margaret as age 1, and lists an Alice WILSON as age 5. Alice is not
listed on the manifest with this family, and manifest clearly list Margaret as age 5.
See also next note and note for #573 Alice PRESCOTT.
564-570 Ages in this range are apparently misaligned on the manifest.
The age that is closest to George is 1 1/2. However, since this age is associated with
a male Bricklayer, it is unlikely that these belong to a 1 1/2 year old. It appears as
if both ages for Alice and Margaret PRESCOTT (see previous note) were written, but only
Margaret's name was listed here, Alice appears at number 573, where the listed age is 23
I have listed ages AS THEY ARE WRITTEN, so readers can assess what has happened.
564 Age was recorded as 1 1/2 but changed to 1y 6mos for consistency
567 CD transcript has name as Ann Marintha PICKERING. Age was recorded as 4 1/2 but changed
to 4y 6mos for consistency
568 CD transcript has occupation as Coal Miner, but manifest has simply 'Miner'.
576-578 Cabin passengers, listed on a separate page with large writing.
576 CD transcript has Captain STAYNER and Mrs STAYNER separately, the dual ages and markings
around (Lady) which appears after the last name would support this being two people,
Captain J.T. STAYNER and Lady (Mrs. STAYNER)
578 CD transcript has occupation as 'Monkwearmouth' and 'President of the Company'.

Correspondence 04/02/2003 passengers #559-563 Prescott
My ancestor on the Juventa was Margaret Prescott (nee Westhead) married to
James. Her father was William Westhead, my Great Great Great Grandfather.
My mothers maiden name was Marion Westhead. The Westhead family have lived
and still live in the Ormskirk, Lancashire area for 500 hundred years. I
have done quite extensive research into my family of the Westheads in
England. I know when and were Margaret's family (Prescott) lived and died.
Bountiful Utah. I know they landed in Philadelphia but I would like to
know what happened to these passengers when they landed. If anybody has
any information about what happened to them when they arrived in America
I would appreciated it if they could let me know. I would also like to
know if the passengers had converted to the Mormon faith before they sailed
or after. What incentive had to been given for them to leave England for
America? Angela Vivian
