Ship Juventa*
I Alfred Watts do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the Report or Manifest subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the District of Philadelphia contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the passengers which were on board the Ship Juventa at the time of her sailing from the port of Liverpool or which have been taken on board at any time since; that I am at present, and have been during the voyage, master of the said vessel. And I do likewise swear that all matters whatsoever in the said Report or Manifest are, to the best of my knowledge and belief, just and true.
Alfred Watts (signed)
Sworn before me, this 7th day of May 185?

Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder
or comments about the look of the transcribed section.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letter(s) that could not be read, due to
quality of the original document.
*This ship was transcribed on the Mormon Immigration CD, and a copy of this
information was available for my use. As I did my transcription, I compared
what I read with the CD transcript and have noted any discrepancies in the
information on the manifest. Note that the CD transcript also has additional
information about the ship, the passage and the origin of most passengers.
Much of the information on the CD transcript has 'BMR (British Missionary
Records)' listed as the source.
*The cover page has this ship listed as "SHIP JUVENATA". For consistency's
sake, I have used "Juventa" which is written several times on the following
pages.
*The last digit of the year in the 'sworn before me' date is blotted.
*There may be additional letters at the end of the last name of the Collector,
but this has been blotted out.
*The last column was originally "Number and Names of Passengers who have died
on the Voyage".
Passenger Notes:
1-10. Baggage is bracketed around all of these passengers.
11-18. Baggage is bracketed around all of these passengers.
13. Occupation has a ditto mark, but is unlikely to be wife.
CD transcript has 'Farmer'.
15. CD transcript has this passenger as Madeline, but it is clearly
written Mallina with no space for any letters between the two
ascending letters ('ll').
18. CD transcript has last name as Bertoich, but it looks more like
Berto?h (one letter).
21. CD transcript has this passenger as Daniel. It is possible, but
both names (20 and 21) look the same-as David.
24. Age on manifest shown as 1 1/2.
22-24. Baggage is bracketed around all of these passengers.
25. CD transcript has last name as either Bodero or Bordaire, but looks
more like Bordeau or Bordiai.
26-29. Baggage is bracketed around all of these passengers.
31. CD transcript has last name as Mathes, but it looks more like
Mathers, Mathew or possibly Mathus.
32. Last name listed on CD transcript is Hindeman, but this name is
written Hinderman.
35. Name is very faint-looks like Anna, but might be Emma. Last name
begins with B and looks too long for Anna Benz (no descending letter
and age is 20 not 19) or Emma Beard--although the last letter could
be a 'd'.
36. Name is very faint. Last name looks like it might be Lasher, but
first letter is too faint.
37. Couldn't find OLD on CD. It might be ALDPALDE or OLDPALDE,
(Caroline) and maybe writer just put OLD or ALD or the copy is worn.
She was born in 1830 so could be the right age 24 on the manifest.
40. Last name is very faint. Listed as Wehelin on the CD, but looks
like Wehoin.
41-42. CD transcript has the last name as Loader, but the third letter
looks more like an O, so the name could be Looder.
42. CD transcript has occupation as wife. It is blank on the manifest,
age is 5.
43. CD transcript has the last name as Collings. There is no 'G' written
on the manifest.
44-45. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
45. CD transcript has first name as George--it is very faint, but looks
like J?eog?.
46. CD transcript has the name as Mathilda Collings. There is no 'H' in
the first name nor 'G' in the last name written on the manifest.
47. Spinster is dittoed for this passenger. It is unlikely that he was
a spinster.
47-49. Baggage is bracketed around only the first 3 in this family.
51-52. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
53. CD transcript has last name as Blakemore, but it is clearly written
Blackem??, so could be Blackemore.
55. CD transcript has last name as Domville, but second letter drops to
baseline (like an 'a') before going on to the third letter and there
doesn't appear to be enough 'bumps' for a 'mv'.
55-57. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
58. CD transcript has the last name as Ackerle, but there is a descending
line from the last letter into the name below, Moore, which does not
have an ascending line, so looks like Ackerly.
59-60. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
61. CD transcript has the first name as Thomas, the first name looks
like it might be Robt.
62-64. There is a crease over age--CD transcript lists ages as 39, 39 and
15 respectively. CD transcript has last name listed as Dungee, but
the 2nd letter is 'a' and 3rd letter looks like 'ar' making the name
Dangee or Dargee. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
65. There is a crease over age. CD transcript lists age as 40. See
also note for 66.
65-67. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
66. Age is written as 42 (it is hard to read due to crease above and
dark copy). CD transcript has age as 41.
67. CD transcript has occupation as miner although nothing is written
in this column.
68-101. For this page, the age and gender columns were reversed on the
manifest. I have kept the format for this transcription the same
as the rest of the pages.
68-71. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
70. CD transcript has her first name as Hannah, but it is clearly
written 'Anna'.
72. CD transcript has first name as William, but 5th/6th letters are too
faint to read. CD transcript lists Occupation as 'Weaver', but this
is very faint on the manifest.
72-73. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
74. CD transcript lists Occupation as 'Miner', but this is too faint to
read on the manifest.
74-78. Baggage is bracketed around all 5 passengers.
75. Age looks like 25, but CD says she was born in 1828 which would make
her 28.
78. CD transcript has age as 62, but only the 6 is visible.
CD transcript also lists Occupation as wife, but manifest is too
faint to read.
79-80. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
82-83. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
83. CD transcript has age as 23, but it looks like 25.
84-87. CD transcript list last name as Millard, but it looks more like
Mulden. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
86. CD transcript has age as 12, but 2nd letter is too faint to read.
88-89. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
89-90. Ages listed are identical.
92-94. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
93. CD transcript has initials as M.H.F Bell, and age as 29--but the
down stroke on the 2nd digit is long and fat like this writer's 7's
not shorter and thin like his 9s.
95-97. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
98. CD transcript has this passenger as Bonfield Shimbely. Last name
might also be Kimberly, Thimbely or Kimblely. First letter(s) are
fanciful and looped. The letter after the B might ascend or it might
have a mark on the copy. A letter in the prior name descends over
the initial letter of the first name, but the writer has darkened
the B somewhat. CD also has age as 48 although the manifest appears
to have 43 or 45.
100. Not listed with this name on CD transcript-could not find another
matching name.
101. Last name listed as Finch on CD transcript--Looks like there are
more letters than that, perhaps French, but first letter does not
look like an F. CD also has occupation as spinster, but 'widow' is
written on manifest.
104. CD transcript has age as 43, but it looks more like 45
104-106. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.

109-110. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
112-115. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
116. CD transcript has age as 23, but it looks more like 25.
116-119. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
119. CD transcript has first name as Moroni, but this is impossible since
the dot for the 'i' is before the 'n'. Also, Moroni is a male name
and this passenger is listed as female. The name looks like 'Morine'
--perhaps Maureen spelled phonetically--but could be Moxine or Movine.
120. CD transcript has age as 34, but 33 is clearly written.
120-121. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
123-126. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.

name obscures the third letter--probably 'Jos.'. CD also has age
as 24, but 21 is written.
128-130. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
133. CD transcript has occupation as Fruiterer, but occupation clearly
begins 'Frach' and has a dotted 'i' near the end.
133-134. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
137. CD transcript has first name as Melchezedek, but i is dotted and
there is no ascending line on the last letter.
139-141. CD transcript has this name as Grey, but it is clearly spelled Gray.
Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
142. Letters at the end of the first name are unclear due to descending
line from prior name. Name is most likely written as Eliz^h
--abbreviation for Elizabeth.
145-148. CD transcript has last name as Clegg, but no second g is apparent on
the manifest. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
149. CD transcript has last name as Laurenson, but the fifth letter is
dotted (Laurinson), and an 's' is included at the end.
150. CD transcript has last name as Britorn, but there are clearly 2 't's
and only 2 letters,'en', after them.
151. CD transcript has last name as Brittain, but this name is written
the same as #150.
152. CD transcript has last name as Brittain, but name is dittoed from
#151. First digit of age is unreadable, and CD does not list an age.
153. CD transcript has last name as Harper, but Hooper is clearly written.
154. CD transcript may have last name as Tryel, but also lists Susan Tryel
as age 26--60 is clearly written. On the manifest it does look like
TRYEL is possible, but letter from both the line below and the line
above extend into this name making it difficult to read.
155. Occupation might be Cloth Dryer, unless the 'y' has and extra loop.
157-158. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
159-164. Baggage is bracketed around all 6 passengers.
160. CD transcript has age as 49, but 48 is clearly written.

is 14).

passengers. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
175. No age is written on manifest, but CD transcript has age as 64.
176-178. CD transcript has last name as Lack, but first letters are clearly
'At'. First missing letter could be 'u' or 'o', second missing
letter could be 'h' or 'k'. Possible last names: Atoch, Atock,
Atuch, Atuck. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
179-182. Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
181. CD transcript has age as 14, age might be 13, but looks most like 12.
182. CD transcript has age as 10, but 11 is clearly written.
183-184. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.

written. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.

more like Spien or Spierr, and age is 62 on manifest.
202-204. CD transcript has last name as Hazon, this is possible, but the 3rd
letter looks more like a 'y', and the 4th letter is invisible on the
manifest. Baggage is bracketed around 1st two passengers. #204 is
on the next page and has no baggage listed.
205-206. CD transcript has last name as Bainbridge, but there is no dot for
an 'i', and the 'bumps' after the 'a' seem too close together for
two separate letters. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
207-208. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
209-211. CD transcript has last name as Powdrell, but there is no second 'l'
written. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
212-214. CD transcript has last name as Woodhead, this is possible, but if so,
the ascending line from the final 'd' is not visible. Baggage is
bracketed around all 3 passengers.
216-217. CD transcript has last name as Barns, but there is definitely an 'e'
between the 'n' and 's'. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
218. CD transcript has age as 25, but John's age is written as 24,
Lettice's as 25.
218-220. CD transcript has last name as Herdsman, but second letter is
definitely an 'a' and the 5th letter is dotted (above the 'd').
Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
219. CD transcript has age as 24, but Lettice's age is written as 25,
John's as 24.

and #230).
229-230. Baggage is bracketed around both passengers.
230. Passenger is most likely a 'wife' not a 'Laborer' (See also: #229)
231. CD transcript has the last name as Rumble, but last letter is taller
than 5th letter.
232. Last name appears to be Lack, but list donor is related to this
passenger Dack.
233-236. CD transcript has last name as Strange, but there is no 'e' visible.
Baggage is bracketed around all 4 passengers.
237. CD transcript has last name as Clemence, but only one letter is
visible after the second 'n'. Name looks like Clemens

247. CD transcript lists occupation as 'Helman', however the first letter
is clearly a 'B'.
247-248. CD transcript lists last name as Stephenson, it is possible but first
letters are unclearly written, and 'v' instead of 'ph' is clearly
written. Baggage is centered on line between these two passengers.
249-250. CD transcript has last name as Crawforth, but the last letters are
clearly written as 'rd'.
252-257. CD transcript has last name as Caveen, but manifest appears to read
Cavain. Baggage is bracketed around all 6 passengers.
256. There is a big hole or blotch on the microfilm in this section, so
the entire name of #256 just can't be read. The CD transcript lists
this passenger as Abby Caveen.
257. There is a big hole or blotch on the microfilm in this section, so
much of the name of #257 just can't be read. The CD transcript lists
this passenger as Linora Caveen.
258-259. CD transcript has last name as Kidgeel, but the last two letters are
the same. First letter is either 'R' (Redgill) or 'K' (Kedgill).
Baggage is somewhat misaligned, but brackets before and after these
two passengers encompass large families, so it is likely that the
2 packages listed were for both of these passengers.
260-266. Baggage is bracketed around all 7 passengers.
265. CD transcript has occupation as Dyer, but 'f' from 'wife' in prior
row may cover a 5th letter that might be 'r' (Dryer) or simply a
hump beginning the 'y' (Dyer).
267. CD transcript has occupation as 'Compositor', but 'Printer' is
clearly written.

listed with the family in the manifest.
272. CD transcript has occupation as Bricklayer, but there is no entry
on manifest.
272-277. Baggage is bracketed around all 6 passengers.

writer did not close the 'a'.
278-280. Baggage is bracketed around all 3 passengers.
281. CD transcript has last name as Randall. This is possible, but if so,
writer did not close the 'a'.
281-282. Baggage list is slightly misaligned, so the 1 package appears
between these two passengers but is not bracketed. It is unclear
what this means (1 pkg each, 1 pkg between the two).
283-285. Baggage is slightly misaligned but appears to be bracketed around
all 3 passengers.
286-287. Baggage is slightly misaligned but appears to be bracketed around
both passengers.
288. CD transcript has occupation as Framework Knitter, the 'knitter'
portion is clear, but the first word is unclear. It appears much
shorter than 'framework' (5-6 letters), with 1-2 ascending letter(s)
near the end of the word.
289-294. Baggage is bracketed around all 6 passengers.
293. CD transcript has age as 2, but 5 is written for Robert.
294. CD transcript has middle name as Elizabeth, and age as 2 (3 is
clearly written).
295. CD transcript has last name as Dickison, but the first 'n' is clear.
296-298. CD transcript has last name as Aspey, there is some overlap between
first written name and the 'do' (meaning 'ditto') in the following
line, but the 'r' is clear. Baggage is bracketed around all 3
passengers.
299. Occupation of 'wife' is written, but is unlikely. CD transcript
has age as 62 and occupation as Gardener.
300. Occupation of 'wife' is written, but is unlikely. Name and age
duplicate #301. CD transcript lists Elias's wife as Hannah Hunt age
60. Hannah is not listed with Elias, but errors/duplicates might
indicate that this should have been her line.
300-303. This section is very confusing. Names, ages, genders and occupations
all have problems. CD transcript appears to list this family as
Wirwood, but the first letters are 'No'. Baggage is centered
between these 4 passengers.
301. Name and age duplicate #300.
302. CD transcript has first name as Marie, but Maria is clearly written.
Occupation is listed as Brazier, but this is more likely to be the
occupation for #303.
303. CD transcript appears to have this passenger listed as William age
16, but name on manifest is Jno. First digit of age appears to be
round or scribbled out. See also note for #302.
304. CD transcript has age as 34.
307-308. Baggage is centered between both passengers.
308. CD transcript has age as 20, but 30 is clearly written.
Contributor's ancestors passenger #232 DACK

this family. Sheila Tate, ISTG Production Coordinator

Philip DACK was born 28 Jun 1837 in Shipdham, Norfolk, England to
parents William and Sarah Bilham DACK. He came to the US at age 19, alone.
Philip worked his way as a driver of an ox team for a freighting train
bringing commercial goods to the Utah Territory from "the East". The
train left Atchison on July 1st 1855 and arrived in Salt Lake City on
September 25th 1855. He took an active part in Echo Canyon and Black
Hawk Indian Wars.
In 1857, Philip was selected by the LDS church to help settle
the community of Payson, Utah, south of Salt Lake City. It was in
Payson that Philip met Cynthia Sildona Maxham, daughter of Charles
and Mathilda Russell Maxham. She was born in New York State. She is
a descendant of Elder William Brewster of the 1620 Mayflower Pilgrim
voyage.
Philip and Cynthia were married in Payson on May 16th 1859.
That same year, the young couple was sent to help colonize Wellsville,
Utah, 90 miles or so north of Salt Lake City. The couple lived there for
4 years, beginning their family at this time. In 1864 Philip moved
southward again, into the hamlet of Fayette, in Sanpete County. The
Dacks were some of the first settlers in Fayette. Altogether, Philip
and Cynthia had 11 children. They lived in Fayette for the next 51 years.
Philip was actively engaged in all that pertained to building up the
community of Fayette and contributing to its progress. He had a "green
thumb" and "whatever he placed in the ground grew". He was well known
for his English currants and gooseberries. Philip became a prominent
farmer and livestock man in the ensuing years. In 1892 he was appointed
Justice of the Peace in Fayette and held that position for many years.
Also in 1892, he was named as school trustee, an office he held for
6 years. By 1898, the city of Fayette could boast a population of
300 people. Philip Dack sat as a director of the Fayette Canal Company,
which brought water from the Sevier River to "quench the thirst" of
the town.
Philip never forgot his promise to bring his loved ones to Utah. In
1866, his sister Hannah Dack arrived in Salt Lake City, followed
closely by Martha Ann. Later, sister Charlotte, and brother
James and daughter (and grand daughter) would come too. In the summer
of 1869, Philip arranged, and paid for, the passage of his mother and
father, Sarah B and William Dack, and 13 year old niece, Charlotte E Dack,
to America. The trio sailed to the US on the ship "Manhattan".
Cynthia died 12 Sept 1921 and Philip died 30 March 1923 both in Sanpete
County, Utah.
Their children were:
Sarah Matilda 15 Apr 1860
Eva Charlotte 11 Jan 1862
Eda Eliza Mar 1864
Philip Asa 14 Dec 1865
Agnes Annie 13 July 1868
Clarissa Jane 19 Apr 1871 (died at age 7)
Cynthia Sildona 5 Jan 1873
Hope Wayne 3 June 1875
Daisy Dean 10 Jun 1878
William Charles 2 May 1881
Earl Maxham 3 May 1886
Correspondence added June 13, 2007, passengers 116-119 NUTTER
I am writing to provide information on my ancestors (passengers 116-119) which were
aboard the Juventa, traveling from Liverpool to Philadelphia on 7 May 1855.
Based on my family’s history, the actual names and ages are:
Wm (William) Nutter (Male) Age: 24-25 years
Dinah Nutter (Female) Age: 18 years
Olive Nutter (Female) Age: 1 year
Moroni Nutter (Male) Age: 4 months
William and Dinah arrived in the United States and first settled in Philadelphia
where Olive died of summer complaint and was buried. Shortly thereafter, Moroni
died and was buried in Gloster, N.J. while the Nutters were seeking work. They
eventually traveled west with the Mormons, settling in Utah, but shortly after
returned east and purchased a “squatter’s right” to a claim on Wood River near
the village of Shelton, Nebraska.
William was between the ages of 24-25 when he traveled to Philadelphia from his
family’s home in Lacastershire, England. Olive was the eldest of the two children,
being aged 1 year at the time of travel and Moroni was about 4 months old at the
time of travel.
William and Dinah did travel back to England immediately following the stampede of
1864 in the Nebraska territory. They traveled back to Liverpool via Quebec. William
returned to the United States shortly after arriving in England aboard the City of
Boston steamship. The remaining family (including recently born children) joined
William in the states in July of the same year. They then purchased land again in
Nebraska and remained there for the rest of their lives.
William and Dinah are my great-great-great Grandfather and Grandmother. Along with
a few other members of my family, we are working on piecing together as much of our
family history as possible. Anyone is welcome to contact me for additional information
on the Lancastershire/Nebraska Nutters. My email address is malstria@gmail.com
Thank you,
Jennifer Roberts (Nutter)
