SS Gellert
I, Edmund Christian Kopff, Master of the S.S. Gellert, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Gellert at Hamburg from which port said Gellert has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the location of the compartments or space of the said vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each, also a true statement so far as can be ascertained with reference to the intention of each alien passenger, as to a protracted sojourn in this country.
Sworn to this 7 July 1884, [signature is indecipherable]
So help me God, E Koppf, before me
List or Manifest Of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the Gellert whereof E. C. Kopff is Master, from Hamburg, burthen 2350,53 tons
Columns represent: Passenger number, Names, Age (years, months), Gender, Occupation, Country of Citizenship, Intended Destination, Compartment Location/Space, Number of pieces of baggage, the country in which they intend to become inhabitants. The column for Intended Destination has been omitted in this transcription because all passengers are listed with the U.S. as their destination. A number of passengers were designated as "transient." These are cited at the end of this list in the transcriber's notes. Except for the final 18 passengers traveling in cabin, all others were travelling in steerage.

Transcriber's notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates a footnote for clarification or explanation.
A question mark (?) indicates letters that are difficult to decipher with
certainty.
A caret (^) indicates that the letters following are superscripted with the
name being abbreviated.
Upper Compartment has been abbreviated U.C.
Much of the original has a tear down the middle, often obliterating the entries
in the column for occupations, particularly for passengers numbered 1-125.
297 Sixth letter of surname may be an "a" or an "s" thus Brandspic or
Brandapic
302 Given name has an umlaut over the "o"
307 Surname difficult to decipher. It definetly begins with a "Zi" but
the following letters have a line above them usually indicating a
double "n", but then there aren't enough letters and there seems to
be something missing. It may be Zinmann, Zinsann, Zimmann or Zinsmann.
336 Second digit of the age is overwritten, may be 26 or 28
343 First letter of surname could be I, thus Iefsek
350-351 First letter of surname could be L, thus Luchowolsky
403 First letter of surname could be either K or H, thus Kack or Hack
417-418 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
422 Surname may have an umlaut over the "a"
425 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
433 Surname has an umlaut over the "o". Probably should be an o with a
slash through it as is more common in Scandinavian names.
434 broncer - occupation could mean Bronzer-someone who puts
the substance bronze onto something
440 Given name has an umlaut over the "o"
442 Surname blurred by a page crease, final letter may be "z" or "t"
thus Nieterz or Nietert
445 Occupation is listed as farmer--unusual to find an occupation listed
for a female
467-468 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
486 First letter of surname may be an "N" thus the name Nyquist
494 Age written as 2/2, probably means 2 years, 2 months
507 Name entered is then crossed off and no other columns are filled in
508 Last letter(s) of surname difficult to discern. Looks like a "p"
but may be a ß thus a double "ss" so name could be Kleinp or Kleinss
519-510 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
524 Surname is blurred, the last letters look like "pr??" of "fr??"
Schapira or Schafrin
533 Second letter of surname difficult to decipher. It is either an "n"
or a "u" thus making the name either Anstern or Austern
534 Name entered but then crossed out. No age given but ditto marks are
used in the other columns indicating the same information as the
previous entry.
544-545 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
546-547 Names are entered (and age for #546) but no further information and
the names are also crossed off
568-569 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
575 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
Correspondence 10/15/01 passenger #371 SCHULZ
I found my( ancestor) grandmother on my fathers side----" Pauline Schulz"
from Germany. Her full name was Pauline Louise Schulz, passenger #371.
She married my grandfather Elijah C. Davey December 21,1887 in Florence,
Wisc. She had 2 children my father (1) Clarence Paul Davey born in Ely,
Minn. and his sister (my aunt) (2) Clare Pauline Davey born 1890 in
Chicago,Ill. They all lived in Chicago from 1890 to aprox. 1913. The
1920 census shows Pauline and her husband living in Dayton, Ohio. Pauline
died in Michigan City, Ind. on 1926 three years before I was born. The
1920 census she stated she came from Putzig (Germany or Prussia?)
