SS Gallia
I, Michael Murphy, Master of the S.S. Gallia do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool & Queenstown from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of the said passengers; the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien pasenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country.

Built in 1878 by J&G. Thomson, Glasgow for the Cunard SS Co., she was a 4,809 gross ton ship, length 430.1 ft x beam 44.6 ft., one funnel, three masts (barque rigged for sail),iron construction, single screw and a speed of 13 knots. There was accommodation for 300-1st and 1,200-3rd class passengers. Launched on 12th Nov. 1878, she sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to Queenstown (Cobh) and New York on 5th April 1879. On 20th April 1886 she started her first Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston sailing and commenced her last voyage on this service on 5th Sep. 1895. Chartered to Cia Transatlantica of Spain in 1896 she was temporarily renamed "Don Alvaro de Bazan" and used for transporting troops to deal with the Cuban Rebellion. Later the same year she reverted to her previous name of "Gallia" and resumed Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston voyages on 21st May 1896. Her last sailing on this route started 7th Oct. 1897 and she was then sold to the Beaver Line. Her first voyage for these owners started 20th Nov. 1897 when she left Liverpool for Halifax and St. John NB, and her last on 18th Mar. 1899 from Liverpool to St John NB. In 1899 she went to the Allan Line and commenced her first sailing from Liverpool for Quebec and Montreal on 4th May 1899 but went aground near Sorel Point, Quebec, was salvaged and scrapped at Cherbourg the following year. William J. Randon, passenger #45 is the contributor's grandfather.

William J. Randon was born April 2, 1849 at Kings Norton, Staffordshire.
He married Mary Ann Davies at St. Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham, on
February 23, 1873. He was employed at Smethwick Glass Works before
his marriage and the Glass Works at Sunderland up to the time he
departed for the U.S. in 1886. At the time of his journey to America,
his wife and four children remained behind. He found work at a glass
works in Crystal City, Missouri. He then returned to England to bring
his family to the U.S. Five children had been born in England; three
were then born in the U.S. The Crystal City glass works was bought by
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.
He transferred before 1900 to the glass works at Charleroi, Pennsylvania
where he established his family homestead which remained in the family
several decades after his death. He died April 28, 1912 in Charleroi.
