Transcriber's Notes:
* Asterisks indicate transcriber's notes.
? Question marks indicate illegible letters
* Seventeen passengers were individually noted as died on the voyage, but a
line has been drawn through the entry of 24 November for passenger #358
Trina Otten, and she is not included in the list at end of manifest. Since
this was one day before the date of sworn statement, perhaps they were
already at the port.
* All passengers are numbered consecutively on left side of manifest, but
there is a second number series on right edge for just the non-cabin
passengers. Number 211 in right-hand series is missing, and a note that
appears to have been added at that point later reads "211 left."
* Misspelling and inconsistency of place names is as on the original, and many
apparent given name abbreviations were not confirmed by a period,
eg: Adelh = Adelheid, Fried = Friedrich.
* Entries in Died column were written out, eg: "died on the 10th November" and
too long for transcription space, so full entries are listed in notes below,
and the column has been eliminated.
* Some passengers have the purpose of their travel listed in the Occupation
column, also too long for transcription space, and those are included in the
notes below.
* Surnames of the following passengers contained an umlaut:
Umlaut over a: 509.
Umlaut over o: 63, 84, 196, 230, 289, 302, 317, 384, 399-402, 403, 411,
441 (second o), 459-461, 479, 491, 492, 493, 510, 521, 527, 543.
Umlaut over u: 17-20, 32-33, 34, 64-67, 127, 155, 201-204,240, 244-245, 258-264,
265-271, 287, 289, 321, 328, 347-352, 370-373, 444, 509, 550.
* Countries or places of origin containing an umlaut:
Umlaut over u: 305-309, 337-339.
Passenger Notes:
#279 - Occupation "to her Sister"
#284 - Occupation "to her husband"
#290 - Occupation "to her children" ("her" should be "his")
#310 - Occupation "belonging to Number 269" (refers to passenger 278; 269 is
non-cabin passenger number on right edge of list)
#328 - Occupation "to her Son"
#333 - Occupation "to her relations"
#337 - Occupation "to her Children"
#343 to #346 - Surname should be Vogts.
#349 - "Died on the 10th November" (shown as Johann, male in list at end of
manifest)
#358 - Noted as "Died on the 24th November" but lined through; probably already
at port.
#361 to #366 - Surname should be Tienken; given name of 361 should be
Friedrich.
#367 to #369 - Surname originally transcribed as Bringes, changed to Brünjes.
#372 - Given name should be Gevert.
#374 - Occupation "to her Sister"
#386 - Surname should be Hoehns.
#390 - Occupation "to her Sister"
#394 - Occupation "to her husband"
#406 - Occupation "to her Brother"
#407 - Occupation "to her Sister"
#412 - "Died on the 14 November"
#416 - "Died on the 11 November"
#418 - "Died on the 14 November"
#423 - "Died on the 20 November"
#426 - "Died on the 13 November"

#464 - "Died on the 19 November"
#479 - "Died on the 8th November"
#492 - Occupation "to her Sister"
#528 - "Died on the 16th November"
#544 - Occupation "to relations"
#552 - "Died on the 10th November"
#553 - Written in Died column: "211 was left." This is apparently to explain
an adjustment of the total non-cabin passengers, and nothing that
pertains to passenger 553.
#554 - Written across the page after age and sex columns: "belonging to the
family of Number 178 Died on the 21 October" (Refers to family of #188,
H. Keller family; 178 is non-cabin passenger number. The mother, #189
also died.)

The D. H. WATJEN, a 3-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, the first of three vessels of this name, was built by the shipbuilder Johann Lange, of Vegesack/Grohn, for the Bremen firm of D. H. Watjen, and launched on 20 March 1855. --- Until the early 1860's, under her first captain, Hermann Batjer, the D. H. WATJEN made 2 annual sailings from Bremerhaven to New York, on each voyage carrying from 400 to 500 passengers, returning to Europe with a cargo of tobacco and cotton. --- No picture of the D. H. WATJEN is known to survive. - [Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing List by Michael Palmer - 9 August 1998]
