Transcriber's Notes:
* Asterisks indicate transcriber's notes.
? Question marks indicate illegible letters
* Seventeen passengers were individually noted as died on the voyage, but a
line has been drawn through the entry of 24 November for passenger #358
Trina Otten, and she is not included in the list at end of manifest. Since
this was one day before the date of sworn statement, perhaps they were
already at the port.
* All passengers are numbered consecutively on left side of manifest, but
there is a second number series on right edge for just the non-cabin
passengers. Number 211 in right-hand series is missing, and a note that
appears to have been added at that point later reads "211 left."
* Misspelling and inconsistency of place names is as on the original, and many
apparent given name abbreviations were not confirmed by a period, eg:
Adelh = Adelheid, Fried = Friedrich.
* Entries in Died column were written out, eg: "died on the 10th November" and
too long for transcription space, so full entries are listed in notes below,
and the column has been eliminated.
* Some passengers have the purpose of their travel listed in the Occupation
column, also too long for transcription space, and those are included in the
notes below.
* Surnames of the following passengers contained an umlaut:
Umlaut over a: 509.
Umlaut over o: 63, 84, 196, 230, 289, 302, 317, 384, 399-402, 403, 411,
441 (second o), 459-461, 479, 491, 492, 493, 510, 521,
527, 543.
Umlaut over u: 17-20, 32-33, 34, 64-67, 127, 155, 201-204,240, 244-245,
258-264, 265-271, 287, 289, 321, 328, 347-352, 370-373,
444, 509, 550.
* Countries or places of origin containing an umlaut:
Umlaut over u: 305-309, 337-339.

Correspondence 05/17/2003 passengers 278 on page 1 and 310 & 311 on page 2 Minning
Elizabeth Minning, along with two children, Rudolph Minning aged 7 and
Henrich Minning aged 5, arrived at New Orleans, LA on 25 Nov 1857. She
was met by her husband Fredrick Minning and lived on Duffast St. in Jefferson
She died on 13 Oct 1867. After her death Rudolph and Henry Minning
moved to Hopkins County, Texas and are listed in the 1870 Federal Census.
Act of Succession dated 10 Feb 1868 refers to a daughter named Eliza who
was married to August Meyer, who preceded her mother in death. Unable
to find other information on Eliza who must have come to New Orleans
with her husband. City directory of New Orleans list an August Meyer
on Magazine St. hsheppard
Additional Correspondence 10/06/2003 passenger 278 Minnings
A notation on Elizabeth Minnings and her sons, Rudolph and Heinrich that
were passengers on the D.H. Watjen should be corrected. Since finding
that notation I have been in contact with the two others who have
identified a connection to the Minning(s) family. We have determined
that daughter of Elizabeth Minning(s), also named Eliz(beth) Minning,
was not deceased by the time of her mother's Act of Succession in 1868.
This immediate family group includes: Frederich MINNING aka Fritz
Minning (husband/father) in the US by November 1857. Mother Elizabeth
HASSENROUGH arrived on the D.H. Watjen; died 13 October 1867 in either
Orleans or Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Daughter, Eliza, probably born
1844 (not 1848) eventually married (1)August MEYERS (2) John KOENIG; she
died in 1894 after spending her life in the New Orleans area. Notations
have been made about the sons that arrived on the D.H.Watjen, Rudolph
(R.J.) and Heinrich (Henry). Have not located the travel information on
Frederich Minning, his daughter Eliza, and his brothers Franz and
Wilhelm. Also, still looking for the same information on August MEYERS
and John KOENIG, both born in Germany. Thanks for making my first
documentation of my family connection to Europe possible!
Mary
The D. H. WATJEN, a 3-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, the first of three vessels of this name, was built by the shipbuilder Johann Lange, of Vegesack/Grohn, for the Bremen firm of D. H. Watjen, and launched on 20 March 1855. --- Until the early 1860's, under her first captain, Hermann Batjer, the D. H. WATJEN made 2 annual sailings from Bremerhaven to New York, on each voyage carrying from 400 to 500 passengers, returning to Europe with a cargo of tobacco and cotton. --- No picture of the D. H. WATJEN is known to survive. - [Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing List by Michael Palmer - 9 August 1998]
