Correspondence 01/05/03 Captain Peel
I found the following article in the Dec. 8, 1865 NY Times concerning
T. W. Peel, Master of the Brig Costa Rica.

OFFICIAL
DEPARTMENT OF STATE
WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 1865
Information has been received at this department from Mr. Thomas
Kirkpatrick, the Consul of the United States at Nassau, of the
death by drowning on the 25th day of October last, at sea, of
Thomas W. Peel, of Brooklyn, N. Y., master of the brig Costa Rica.
The letter from the Consul at Nassau to Washington is on microfilm
at NARA, College Park, MD. It states that "On 31 October the
American Brig Costa Rica belonging to the Panama Rail Road
Company came in here in distress having during the gale on the
25 October lost over board Thomas W. Peel the master belonging
to Brooklyn, NY and Julius Mis??pt seaman of New York."

The Letter of Administration on file at the Surrogate Court in
Brooklyn, NY lists Jessie Peel as Thomas W. Peel's widow. Therefore,
Thomas Peel is my great great grandfather. Thomas and Jessie
had two children. Alexander was born about 1859 and Annie was
born April 1864. Annie is my great grandmother. Alexander and
Annie eventually moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey. Annie married
John Francis Korkel in 1884 in Elizabeth. They had three daughters,
Jessie, Charlotte(Karcher), and Florence (Diehl). Jessie married
David A. O'Brien in 1909. They were my grandparents. Alexander
married Helen Elizabeth Miller in 1882 in Elizabeth, NJ. and they
had two children, Alexander and Elizabeth. Helen died in 1891.
Alexander remarried to Emilie Kuehne in 1892. They had two
daughters, Annette and Lillie Jessie Sofia. Judy Buckney (ISTG member)
