Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder,
not the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional
information in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
* The recorder of this manifest appears to have listed Occupation, The
country to which they severally belong, and The country in which they
intend to become inhabitants at the top of each page with ditto marks (")
extending to the bottom regardless of age, sex, or family affiliation.
* The Occupation is recorded as Farmer for all except the last passenger.
Therefore, this column has been omitted.
* The Country in which they intend to become inhabitants is listed as New
York throughout the manifest. Therefore, this column has been omitted.
* The column Died on Voyage has no entries. However, there are several Xs
in the Note column and it is assumed these indicate deaths. These will
be noted under Passenger Notes.

the formatter to 1y 3m, indicating 1 years 3 months. This appears to
be the beginning of a new page where the recorder indicated a different
country to which the passengers belonged. It is unlikely that the
1¼-year-old would come from Wurtemberg while the adult with the same
surname would come from Baden.

SHIP CHAUNCY JEROME JUNIOR (1)
The ship Chauncy Jerome Junior was placed on the United States Register of Historic Places on 1 March 1996. Its location is referred to as the Chauncy Jerome, Monmouth Beach Wreck, in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
The ship Chauncy Jerome Jr. (often written Chauncey Jerome or C Jerome) was built on the Connecticut River at East Haddam, Connecticut during the year 1851. The ship was built by master builder Matthew Hubbard in the Old Green Shipyard at the Upper Landing in East Haddam. The ship had three decks and three masts and was one hundred and seventy-eight feet, six inches long, thirty-seven feet, six inches in breadth, and 28 feet in depth. She had a square stern, round tuck and a billed head, and weighed eleven hundred fifty-four tons. (2) She was registered on 9 January 1852.
The ship was owned by the shipyard owner, Daniel B. Warner, and later by a number of investors including James Cone, who was also her captain, and several prominent residents of East Haddam, the shipping firm of Eagle and Hazzard of New York and others. The ship was first used in 1852 as a coastal packet in the famous Eagle Line (Eagle and Hazzard) sailing from her home port of New York to Mobile, Alabama and back. Sometime in the latter part of 1852 she was switched to the Trans-Atlantic route and on 4 September 1852, she is mentioned in the New York Shipping List as arriving at New York from Havre. (3) She is also listed as a fast sailing Packet for Liverpool in January 1853. (4) During 1853, the Chauncy Jerome Jr is listed in the Blue Ball Line, a firm located in Liverpool, which acted as agents for individual American ships with no fixed sailing schedules. (5)
The Chauncy Jerome Jr sailed from Liverpool for New York on 3 December 1853 and went ashore on 12 January 1854 at about 6:30 A.M. off the tavern houses (North Long Branch, New Jersey) in a thick fog while in the charge of a pilot. Early in the day it was possible to land some 70 passengers by surfboat, but as the wind and sea conditions worsened, it became necessary to fire a line by mortar to the wreck. Another 30 passengers were then landed by surfcar. (6) The sea would later subside and in the next month eighteen large lighter loads of her cargo were broken out, but not the iron. On 18 February 1854, the Chauncy Jerome Jr was abandoned.
The wreck consists of several large piles of railroad iron, piles of rectangular iron ingots, and a pile of unopened wooden casks overlaid on the remains of a largely buried wooden wreck. Large bronze pins are visible on the north side of the wreck next to the iron ingots and rails. The south side of the wreck has three rows of wooden knees protruding from the sand. A large portion of the port side of the vessel is apparently just below the sand supporting these knees. There is also a large wooden barrel on the west end of the wreck, contents unknown.
The wreck of the Chauncy Jerome is the only known surviving example of the work of Master Builder Matthew Hubbard or of any ship from the Old Green Shipyard, which closed in 1877. Other known vessels built by Matthew Hubbard in the Old Green Shipyard include the 438 ton schooner John M Minor in 1852, the 890 ton ship Marathon in 1849, and the 855 ton ship Trumbell in 1850. Vessels listed as built by Master Carpenter and later Master Builder Daniel B. Warner in the Old Green Shipyard include the 408 ton Wave Crest in 1857, the 521 back Charles C Fowler in 1854, the 397 ton brig Mary D Lane in 1853, the 178 ton schooner Maria J Carlton, and others. (7)
The Chauncy Jerome Jr is mentioned in Francis Parker's Contributions to the History of East Haddam, Connecticut as "the largest ship ever built upon the Connecticut River above Essex to 1853". It is also believed to be the largest ship ever built at East Haddam.
(1) Information contained within this document has been gathered primarily from a National Register of Historic Places Registration Form prepared by John H. Fullmer and Dan Lieb, members of the N.J. Council of Diving Clubs, 3 February 1995.
(2) U.S. National Archives, Records of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, Record Group 41, Certificates of Registration, 1852.
(3) The C Jerome also made a recorded trip departing Havre on 30 June 1852 with arrival in New York 21 August 1852. This voyage carried Johann Schnell, age 24, of Wuerttemberg, the immigrant ancestor of the writer.
(4) Record of Vessel under caption Maritime Connecticut by Thomas A. Stevens. Contains typewritten information compiled on the Chauncy Jerome largely from the N.Y. Shipping List.

(7) Names, dates, tonnage, and builder of vessels built at East Haddam provided by Connecticut River Museum from a typewritten listing compiled by Thomas A. Stevens under the caption "Record of Vessel" and "Maritime Connecticut". Most of the information appears to come from "The New York Register", "Middletown Customs", and other sources. A listing was also compiled by Karl P. Stofko, Municipal Historian, East Haddam, Connecticut.
