Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the filing system
for Chinese persons at the National Archives. These numbers are included in the
identification of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should
have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

In the No of Certificate column heading Certificate is crossed out and replaced by Ticket.

Last Residence is somewhat difficult to determine. There are ditto marks down the length
of the column beneath the Hong Kong entry in the first row. There are also other cities
entered in this column as noted above. All of these passengers have Landed stamps that
are placed over the Destination column. Some of them have legible entries under the stamp.
It is possible that these passengers' Last Residence is not what is written in the column.
Rather, that the record shows different destinations, one by ship and another the final
destination, since only passengers with a US destination have this anomaly.

The Destination column was created by the original recorder.

Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below. Occupation is universally
recorded as Merchant or Grocer because following the Chinese Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882
admission was denied to all Chinese except laborers already in the US and "students,
teachers, merchants or those proceeding to the United States from curiosity."

Callao is the port for Lima, Peru. Bluefields is on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

This manifest is one of the more challenging I have transcribed. The handwriting is difficult
and the information has been written over and is in general difficult to interpret. The
handwritting of this recorder has spikes instead of rounded humps for lower case m and n.

7,31,33-35,37,40-41 Departed per SPRR January 24, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific RR.
8-9,20 Departed pe SS Colon Febry 19, 1895.
3 Second name looks like Shing but there are not enough spikes for both i and n. There is
     a dot.
5 Third name could be Pan but the spikes are very tall and look more like Pall.
20 Second name looks like Lt. It is a clear L followed by a tall spike and an apparent cross.
26-27 Departed per SS Colima Mch 18, 1895.
32 The city written beneath the Landed stamp is illegible, but could be San Francisco since
it seems to be two words.
35 The initial letter of the third name has loops both above and below so could be a Y.
The second letter is a or u.
