City of Peking do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates. The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be
difficult. However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a
part of the National Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers
are included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed
by a stamp that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by
Insp's (blank for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These
passengers were probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country.
The National Archives should have a file for these passengers describing what
happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following column had no entries and was not included:
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is recorded as Grocer for all passengers.
Complexion (Yellow) and Color of Eyes (Black) are recorded only for passengers
not bound for San Francisco. Height for these passengers is simply 2 numbers,
presumably feet and inches of height.
Height seems to have been recorded for San Francisco bound passengers also, but
most of the entries are obscured by the stamps for Landing or Refused.
Legible entries are recorded in the notes below.
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Bluefields is on the Caribbean
coast of Nicaragua.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is
possible that they have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived
in San Francisco after 1886.
Perhaps the total number of passengers differs from the number of passengers on
the list because of the addition of passenger 25.
9 Height is 5'2".
10 Height is 5'6".
11 Height is 5'6". Is in transit for Tahiti. Departed per Bn Galilee
June 1, 1895.
22 Height is 5'4".
25 This entry is in a different hand and has an attached note: "Inserted by
H.H. Rickey, Verif. Clerk, 7-5-45. This Chinese granted Registry
6-29-45., Cert. #256294.

35 Landed "I.T."Transit List 4416, Departed per Steamer Colima Panama
May 18 '95. This is inconsistent with the Habeas Corpus case. It is
not clear which action took place.
36 Departed per Str Colima May 18 '95.
40 There is an illegible note after the Transit List number that probably
says he departed on the Colima.
43,45 Departed per Str Colima May 18 '95.
52-53 Departed per SPRR. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
54-105 Departed per SPRR. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
