Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters. Brackets [ ] are used to signify
information added by the transcriber.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
The No of Certificate column has been divided into two columns. The first half has Ticket
written in under the No. of. The other half has dates entered. They are probably the
dates the certificates were issued.
Occupation is Grocer for for all passengers except as noted below.
The Last Residence column has some Chinese words entered for passengers not bound
for San Francisco. It seems likely that these are villages. At the top of each of the
non-San Francisco lists there are four words, two above the line and two on the line.
These are transcribed as written. Passengers with nothing in this column have ditto
marks signifying the same as the entry above them, but it is difficult to decipher
because these marks seem to occur also where there is an entry. There are also more
ditto marks than there are lines of passenger names. It is not customary for ISTG
to transcribe ditto marks, usually replacing them with the information they signify.
In this instance the ditto marks are used because it is not clear what information
they signify. Perhaps they mean the two words at the very top of the column so that
each passenger has these two words as well as the two that are on his line or the line
above him with an entry.
Merida is in Mexico. Punta Arenas is on the Strait of Magellan in Chile, but there is a
Puntarenas on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Acajutla is in El Salvador.
The discrepancy between the number of transcribed passengers and the recapitulation is
probably due to the two children who are not listed separately from their mothers.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
1 Occupation is "to join her husband."
2-3 Occupation is "girl with mother #5."
1-3 "Landed on Bond see Insp. Harrison." "Collector has all papers."
5 Last Residence is Yellowstone, Montana.
6 Last Residence is Pa?aso, Montana. This could be Pajaso, Payaso or Pagaso.
7-8 The names look like either Jew Me Kue and Jew Me Get or Jew McKue and Jew McGet.
These passengers have no occupation listed.
7 Listed as "Mrs [name] & child (boy)." Under the Native of US it says
"European ??" [another word].
25 Moore's Flat is listed as Nevada Co.
34 Second name could be Dip.
38 Marshfield is listed as in Coos Co.
49 Williams is listed as in Cocono Co. Ariz.
60 Second name could be Gowe.
68 Under Park City it says summer work.
70 Sonora is listed as Tuolomne Co.
73 Occupation is "to join her husband." After her name it says & Ch boy.
74 Occupation is "boy with mother." Besides Native of US he is listed as merchant's son.
75 There is a word that starts with E written under the Affadavit Merchant stamp.
It could be European.
76-82 Besides the Last Residence transcribed above there is Seong Chung Hoi Ping written
in at the head of the column with what appear to be ditto marks below it for the
rest of the passengers. See Last Residence note above.
77 Occupation is "with uncle #64."
78 Occupation is "cousin #65."
82 Was landed by Insp. Boyce.
83-119 per SPRR Nov 18, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
119 Occupation is "with his uncle #69."
122-130 per SPRR Nov 18, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
132-136 per SPRR Nov 18, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
125 Second name is Shai or Shu.
137 per City of Sydney, Panama, Nov 18, 1895.
138 per SPRR Nov 18, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
139-143 per City of Sydney, Panama, Nov 18, 1895.
144-146 per SPRR Nov 18, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
