Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1895 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant, except as noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
No of Certificate
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is recorded as Grocer for all male passengers on the main list.
Last place of Residence is China for all passengers not bound for San Francisco.
There is a La Libertad on the coasts of Ecuador and El Salvador and in the interior
of Nicaragua. Bluefields is on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.
The difference between the captain's total and the transcribed total is the passenger for
San Francisco who did not board.
There is a hand written note on the cover sheet:
"Occidental and Oriental Steamship Co, San Francisco, June 25, 1895
WW Presbury, Esq., Custom House Inspector
Dear Sir: We beg to inform you that the numbers of Chinese ??.(cut off) Coptic voyage 10
arrived June 23rd destined for Bluefields w??(cut off) changed their destination to
Havana are as follows: #82,83,84.
Yours truly, (signature) S. Silver??? (cut off)
There is no evidence of Inspector Grant's Report referred to for passengers 94 and 95. It
might be in the records at the San Bruno National Archives branch.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
3 Second name is Lock or Gock. The initial letter has a loop at the top that is larger
than in other Ls yet not shaped exactly like other Gs. The letter looks more like a G
than an L.
12 Denied is written in in the Last Residence column. The Inspector who landed this
passenger was O'Leary, not Grant, probably because he was not landed immediately.
There is no date in the Landing blank.
19 This name is crossed out and the third name may have one or two letters at the end
that are illegible.
21 Denied is written on this passenger's line. It would be unusual for a San Francisco
passenger to have a Transit List number. Perhaps this is why.
26 Habeas Corpus Case Number is probably 11177.
45-49,51,65-66 Departed per SPRR June 24, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
63-64 There are notes on these lines "To join her husband Lam Yan" "with her mother No 86."
74-76 "Changed to Havana per SPRR" This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
84-87 Departed per SPRR June 24, 1895. This is probably Southern Pacific Railroad.
92-93 There is a note "Landed temporarily by order of Dep Coll etc.--see Grant Rept July 3,'95"
96-100 These passengers are listed on a separate page that has no information entered
in the blanks at the top, including the name of the vessel. It is identified as
Coptic by someone who wrote "Coptic June 24, 1895, Hong Kong" on the body of the page.
The handwriting of the names is different from that on the other pages of this list and
different from that of the person who wrote Coptic on the page. It is possible
that these were cabin passengers; they were always listed separately. It is also
possible that it is not a Coptic list.
