Sworn to, this 6 October 1867 Before me (unreadable). Signed B. Gleadell. So help me God

Correspondence 2/16/02 passenger #183 Dorr
The great granddaughter of Suzana Dorr and contribuor of this manifest,
Marge Campbell, says her correct age should be 27 but the manifest
clearly says 18.
Correspondence 09/14/02 passengers #255 & 256 Kapps
Nicholas KAPPS, #255 emigrated from Waltenheim sur Zorn before 1848 and this
must have been a trip back to his homeland. He settled in Evansville,
Vanderburgh Co. IN and married 1. Mary Catherine PFOHL in 1848 in Evansville,
and had one daughter, Mary Catherine, who survived to adulthood. The Henry
listed beneath him, must have been a son of Nicolas's and his 2nd wife,
Elizabeth Paul. Judy Szczesny
Correspondence added 9-29-2006 # 296, Kinitz
I was reading the information on the SS Cella in Vol. 4 online.
Passenger number 296 is listed as A. Kinitz, age 35, male, a shoemaker,
from Baden to New York, in steerage.
I wonder if this could possibly be my great-grandfather. This is the
information I have on him:
His name was Emil Conitz (I have seen information listing him as
Frederich August Emil Conitz) born in 1845 in Prussia. He was
actually in his early 20s when he left his home in Kolmar for the U.S.
That was in 1867 or 1868.
On the trip over, he learned to speak 6 languages. He arrived in
New York and worked for a cobbler for two months, then went to visit
relatives in St. Louis and Chicago. He didn't like the north, so went
back to NY, took a boat to New Orleans, then to Galveston. (Galveston
ship records said that they would not have him on their records if he
came in, first, somewhere else.)
In Galveston, he met his wife, Louise Meier, who was coming in to the U.S.
with her family from Brandenburg. Emil and Louise married in Galveston
in 1877. (I have conflicting dates there and believe it could be 1871.
Haven't found that marriage record yet.) In 1871, they settled in the
new town of Calvert, in Robertson county, Texas. Emil opened one of the
first businesses there, a cobbler shop.
Emil Pietsch, also from Prussia, was in partnership with Emil Conitz
for a while, before opening his own cobbler shop, and, later, had a
service station and sold the first automobiles in town.
Emil Conitz was well known for his abilities as a bootmaker, and his
decorated cowboy boots were prized by men who wore them to church on
Sundays.
Later, Emil Conitz opened a grocery store and had other business interests.
He was partners in a lumber yard and also owned land and cattle. He used
a boot for his cattle brand, a symbol which was on his cobbler shop.
After he became established, he sent for his widowed mother,
Johanna Juliana Christina Sitz Conitz, who entered the U.S. through
Galveston. Johanna lived with Emil, Louise, and their children in
Calvert, until her death.
Emil's son, also Emil, opened a dry goods store in 1901 on the corner of
the same block where his father had his grocery store. Young Emil
graduated from business college in Galveston and left there just prior
to the 1900 hurricane. The school was destroyed and the owner and his
family were killed in the Great Storm. He worked in his dry goods store
through the last day of his life at age 94. The store continued to be
operated by his son, Irvin, and daughter, Thelma, until 2000 after Irvin
died and Thelma sold the store. The building remains as an antique shop.
Emil's only daughter, Hulda, married A.L. Keeling. Keeling was a Wells
Fargo agent and opened a grocery store next door to Emil Conitz's grocery
store. A potter now owns the building where Emil had his grocery store.
The potter told me that, when they did work on the building, he found a
lot of leather scraps, shoe soles, and things for making shoes, under
the floor, when they did work on the building. He didn't know why they
were there. That confirmed, to me, that Emil had his cobbler shop in
the same building where he later had his grocery store.
Emil and Louise had children: Otto (killed by a train at age 6), Emil,
Paul, Eddie, Gustave, Rudolph, and Hulda, all of whom lived in Calvert.
Emil died at age 94 in 1939. Son Emil and daughter Hulda also died at
age 94.
I have seen my grandfather, Emil Conitz Jr.'s, name written as Amilie,
Amil, or Emilie on such things as census records. So, I wondered if
this, too, might be a case of someone writing an A for an E, or, perhaps
they might have used the August in his name. Also, his age could have
been misread or heard incorrectly. And Conitz might have been interpreted
as Kinitz.
I'm not sure what needs to be done to verify information. I have found
his name and some basic information on the Naturalization and Immigration
Index for Robertson County, Texas, which is on that county's gen web site,
along with census records. I called them and they said that I would need
to go there and look for the information. It isn't far away, so I guess I
need to make a trip to look for records.
Thanks for your work in transcribing records and making them easily
available to those of us who would not be able to see them otherwise.
