SS Catalonia
I, Arthur Talbot , Master of the S.S. "Catalonia" do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojurn in this country. So help me God.

Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
* The reader must understand that passenger lists were hand written using pen
points dipped in inkwells. These lists were written on printed forms with
printed column headings. The information presented concerning each passenger
was confined to a separate line. These papers were rolled or folded for
storage. They were later photostated and the images placed on microfilm for
permanent storage. Transcribing this information into typed form involves
contending with changing handwriting styles of two recorders, ink smudges,
adhesive tape on tears, holes, tears and sometimes large black areas of
light leakage affecting the film. In cases where letters were hard to read
or seemed to represent words that made little sense, notes are offered by
passenger number.
* ISTG protocol calls for names to be spelled out rather than follow the
recorder's practice of using "do" for ditto for names repeated below one
another. This means that when a family group all have question marks in
their names, there are no other samples to check for a desired spelling.
Only one was present, followed by a ditto.
* See #803-#849 in the Passenger Notes below, which contains detailed
information concerning a difference in what the columns represented for
these passengers.
* One death was listed, that of passenger #1138 Corm Johnson, 10, child. "died
26 April 1883, cause Cerebral meningitis." The death column has therefore
been eliminated, and another notation is listed in the Passenger Notes
below.
* Due to space constraints the transcriber used abbreviations, mostly under
calling. Hskpr for housekeeper; stone for stonecutter; ?room for groom?
(figure eight type first letter); cottier was a tenant farmer; farrier
was a shoer of horses; mech for mechanic; wever is as as spelled, but
probably should be weaver; an m, a or u, ch followed by a small letter y,
elevated with a dash under it is an abbreviation, for something other than
mechanic, possibly machinery for machinist; garden for gardener; cloth for
cloth cleaner; joiner was a cabinetmaker rather than a general carpenter;
cellar for cellar man; marble for marble mason; brick for brickmaker; shoe
for shoemaker; coffee for coffee merchant; merch for merchant; wood for a
word illegible after four letters; and ,finally, gent for gentleman.
Passenger Notes:
#649 - Could be read as Marm, Marin, Maria (with undotted i's) or a
misspelling of Marion.
#651 - It looks more like an undotted i than an e.
#659 - Ellen is also possible, but less likely.
#662 - Written abbreviated as a W with a raised and underscored m.
#670 - Best guess. Five middle letters not too distinct.
#698 - Doucen or possibly Duncan.
#705 - Recorder abbreviated Thomas as Tho, with s elevated and underscored.
#772 - The C and ga are clear, the other letters are not.
#774 - McColough seems a possibility.
#775 - Might be McGlon. Could be a misunderstanding of McGlynn.
#785 - Looks like Sloman or Slornan.
#786 - Could be Binon with an undotted i.
#791 - A mess of over written letters. Long enough to be Catherine.
#793 - Six letters hard to read. Dalton comes to mind. Calling may be groom.

#801 - Twnan doesn't make as much sense as Tirnan might. The i would be
undotted.
#803 through #850 - The NARA microfilm contained an error. There was a gap
in sequence covering these numbers. The transcriber rented the
filmstrip a second time to be certain it was not an oversight in my
photocopying. I contacted the archives of the state of Massachusetts
and they provided copies of their records for the names involved. There
was a slight difference in column headings. After the column for
Calling, NARA used the headings: Country of which a citizen/ Intended
destination or location/Date and cause of death. Massachusetts used:
Place of birth/Last place of residence/Country of which they intend to
become inhabitants/ If in America before? There were two errors by
NARA which are noted on the list itself. The last child in a family
group who should have number 850, Horace Scarles, was skipped and later
inserted as 859. From 860 onward, names and numbers match.
#820 and #823 - Both names are hard to read due to a fold in the document.
The first seems to be El and two letters, possibly for Eliz. The last
name is six letters. T, a or u, rb, possibly an undotted i. The final
letter is a mystery. It looks like a printed L with a floating small
dash right after it. It could be an abbreviation for a longer word
ending with an L. A name like Turnbull would not seem to fit well.
#822, #844, #854, #861, #866, #867, #875, #877, #878, #879, #880 -
all indicated they had been in America before in the Mass. record
portion.
#845 - Occupation was army pensioner.
#850-#859 - Mass. Archives lists Mrs Francis Scarles as 851 instead of 850.
The numbers then run to William Walton as 859. Mass. has Horace
entered in his correct sequence at 850. From 860 onward, both Mass.
and NARA numbers agree. Also, 856 Edward Frankel reads as Emily on Mass.
which is probably correct given the rest of the line.
#856 - Edward was probably copied erroneously from the line above, considering
the gender information on the line. Mass. lists the first name as
Emily.
#866, #867, #868, #869, #860 - Note that this family group beginning with
Bridget Rumford indicated the following when asked whether they had
been in America before: Bridget Rumford, 866, she and child, 2,
answered yes. Timothy, Grace and Nellie were a no. This is in the
Mass. record portion.
#872 - Is clearly listed as heading for Penna. but the two children, Lorissa
and John are listed for Mass.
#893 - New Hampshire.
#910 - Rhode Island.
#920 - More likely to be Miles than Mites. An ink mark across the letter is
not like the usual T crossbars.
#935 - Only Fall was visible. Probably for Fall River, Mass. as a destination.
#943 - Name appears to be C, followed by u or a, several small on-the-line
letters and a possible double t at the end. Destination only reveals
New. The rest of the state is unknown.
