Transcriber's notes:
* The use of an * indicates an ommission or error made by the
original recorder or comment by the transcriber.
? The use of a ? indicates a word or letter(s) that could not
be read, due to quality of the original document.
^ Indicates the word may be abbreviated or that superscript was
used for the following letter or letters.
General notes:
* The writer of this manifest used ditto marks for the occupation
of all members of a single family. These have been transcribed
as written/dittoed, which sometimes had unusual results (e.g. an
infant shoemaker, a female tinman). Use care when interpreting
the occupation.
* The writer usually abbreviated 'part of the vessel' as U D for
Upper Deck and L D for Lower Deck.
* At the end of the transcript are the following notes in a
different hand, presumably these are passenger count summaries:
cab 2
inf 24 UpDk 459
mid 8_52_26
inf 16 LoDk 381
mid 8_46_23
Notes for Specific Passenger:
Passenger #425-427 - Occupation looks like Sawyer, but could be
Lawyer.
Passenger #439 - Last name could be Sollemon or Solleman.
Passenger #440 - Age looks like 31, but could be 51.
Passenger #443 - Last name could be Calring or Caliring.
Passenger #451-455 - Children are more likely going to their father.
'To Husband' was dittoed from #450.
Passenger #457 - Last name could be Rappletiosh or Rappleposh.
The first letter in question extends below the line but is
crossed like a 't'. The second letter in question is either
an 'i' or the rounded part of a 'p' (which it resembles).
There is no visible dot for the 'i'.
Passenger #461-467 - Last name looks like Inddon, but could be
Luddon, or Suddon.
Passenger #470 - The first letter starts at the bottom, angles
steeply up to the right, small loop at the top, then straight
down with another small loop at the bottom ending with an arc
about mid-way up. It almost looks like a capital L leaning
backwards (to the left) or a capital 'A' with the crossbar
turned out to the right. None of this writer's other 'L's or
'A's (or any other letter) look at all like this.
Passenger #472 - The 'y' from the previous name extends down
over this letter. The name looks like Riesman but could be
Rieshan.
Passenger #486-490 - The last name appears to be Boyer, but the
last letters are hard to read due to the darkness of the copy.
Passenger #499 - The writer indicated a ditto below 'F' for
his mother. Thomas is most likely Male.
Passenger #503 - First letter could be T, L or S, the writer
made all these letters similarly. It is unclear if there
are 2 or 3 letters between the first letter and the final
't's. These letters look like 'ire' or 'ere', but could be
'in', 'ur'. Thus the last name could be Sinett, Linett Finett,
Senett, Lenett, Fenett, Sintt, Lintt, Fintt, Surtt, Lurtt, or
Furtt.
Passenger #506 - 'Francis' is usually the male spelling, listing
is consistent with husband/wife pattern, and it is more likely
that the Surveyer would be male, rather than female, but the
writer indicated a ditto from the Naughton family.
Passenger #509 - Super-scripted letters might be 'my' or 'eny'.
Passenger #526-527 - Writer used a ditto for Margaret Tansey (from
Ireland), but wrote 'England' for Thomas Tansey.
Passenger #530-531 - Mariner was spelled incorrectly on manifest.
Passenger #541-543 - Letters of last name appear to be Coas or Coaf
spread apart. Final letter is likely a final 's' which looks
more like an 'f'. Writer has a tendancy to leave 'd's short
and open, so last name could be Cods.
Passenger #550 - Johana was most likely female rather than male.
Passenger #554 - Last name has been written over, it could be
Brown or Bowen.
Passenger #566 - William was most likely male rather than female.
Passenger #609 - Harman was most likely male rather than female.
Passenger #648-652 - Children were going 'To Father' rather than 'To
Husband' (writer used dittos from wife's note).
Passenger #659 - Caroline was written as belonging to the "U.S.'
rather than England as the rest of the family.
Passenger #664 - There is a small mark that looks like the letter
'C' next to the top of the letter 'I' in 'Ives'. This letter
looks like the letter in the first name of passenger 762. In
that case, the name looks more like it starts with a 'T'. If
so, this passengers name could be Tues or Toes.
Passenger #666 - Last name could be Robb or Rubb.
