Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^ Indicates the word may be abbreviated or that superscript was used for the
subsequent letter or letters.
* The July 1, 1868 date is written across the top of the manifest. This
may be an error on the part of the original recorder.
* For most passengers, it appears that the original recorder wrote one word
across two columns if the country of birth and last legal residence were
identical. To express the manner that this information was represented on
the list, the transcriber has written the same word in each column.
* The captain's name was written as W. Vöckler, with W. Voeckler being an
alternative spelling.
* Between the column information and the list of passengers there are words
and numbers which are in a different handwriting and nearly illegible. A
guess would be the following:
Under "Country of Birth": US ??? (possibly "was") City Am 2-15-37.
Under "Last Legal Residence": Last Po residence
Under "Country Claiming Allegiance": (copy is too dark and smudged to
make out any letters, but the numbers 2-15-37 appear again)
* When a passenger indicated that the United States of America was the country
to which allegiance was claimed, the original recorder wrote U. St. of A.
The transcriber has abbreviated this as USA.
* Ditto marks, "do" (an equivalent meaning to ditto), and long wavy lines were
frequently used by the original recorder in all columns except the column
for age. Often there were many areas containing no information between
ditto marks. The transcriber has taken the preceding word to be what the
original recorder intended to represent, not the blank spaces. There were
ditto marks for surnames also, but it was obvious what the recorders intent
was in this column.
* There were no specific deaths mentioned on this voyage, but a cross (or plus
sign) was used in the remarks column for many passengers. On other manifests
this symbol has represented a passenger who died, but there is no
explanation for this mark on this list. As it is possible these were deaths
on the voyage, the information is listed in the Passenger Notes, below, for
the following 29 passengers: #157, #172, #184, #196, #205, #209, #214, #256,
#263, #288,#322, #359, #363, #366, #399, #404, #460, #469, #483, #491, #506,

may have been scribbled out, or there is a dark mark or hole in the
manifest which obliterates most of the cross. It is possible that this
passenger died on the voyage. See transcriber's notes.

Correspondence 05/13/02 passengers #530 & 538 Heyda
SS Baltimore arrival at Baltimore, July 18, 1868--Passenger #530,
Franz Heyda, was my great-grandfather, and #538 Thomas Heyda was his
brother. Both families settled in Watertown, WI, and both men and
their wives lived in the vicinity until their deaths.
Tom Hady
The "Baltimore" was built in 1868 by Caird & Co, Greenock for North German Lloyd of Bremen. She was a 2,321 gross ton ship, length 285 ft x beam 39 ft, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 10 knots. There was passenger accomodation for 84 1st and 600 3rd class. Launched on 3/8/1867, she left Bremen on her maiden voyage to Southampton and Baltimore on 1/3/1868. On the night of 22-23/5/1872 she was in collision off Hastings with the Spanish vessel "Lorenzo Semprun", was beached and towed to Southampton for repairs. In 1881 her engines were compounded by AG Weser, Bremen, and on 10/10/1883 she commenced her last Bremen - Baltimore crossing. She was subsequently used for the Bremen - S.America service. Her final voyage started on 30/12/1893 and the following year she was scrapped. [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.2, p.545-6]
