Personal Notes:
Passengers #251 to #260 and #263 are ancestors of the transcriber's wife,
Ruth Haseley Grose. Passenger #253, Gustavus William, is her great-grandfather.
They settled on a farm near Sanborn, New York. Passengers #259,260,and 263 are
step-children of John William and the correct spelling of their surname is
Milleville. John's wife, Frederika Schulze Milleville William, was the first
German national to marry into the French Huguenot William family who had lived
in Bergholz, Prussia for over 200 years. William William and his brother Albert
founded a large drygoods store named Williams Bros. Department Store in
Lockport, New York. They changed their name to Williams in 1862.
Correspondence 05/17/2004 passengers #287-290 Wettig/Wittig
Passengers 287 and 288 John and Mary Wettig are my great-great grandparents.
The correct spelling of their name is Wittig. Their son, passenger 289,
Joseph Wittig, is my great grandfather and passenger 290 is Joseph's brother,
Ferdinand Wittig. The family traveled from their hometown of Seitendorf,
Saxony to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since the end of World War II Seitendorf
is no longer part of Germany. All German inhabitants had to vacate their
homes and businesses and the area was given to Poland. John was born
Johannes Wittig on June 24, 1810 in Seitendorf. Mary was born
Maria Anna Prescher on June 6, 1815 in Seitendorf. Joseph was born
Johann Joseph Wittig on January 6, 1839 in Seitendorf and Ferdinand
was born Johann Ferdinand Wittig on March 24, 1841 in Seitendorf. All
four members of the family were members of St. Mary Magdalen's Catholic
Church in Seitendorf. I have copies from the church records of the family's
baptisms.
The family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA along with fellow
passengers #291 and 292, Franz Chr. and Christina Brendler. I'm still
not sure if these two passengers were related to the Wittig's. After
living in Milwaukee a few years, the Wittig's bought a plumbing and gas-
fitting business in Milwaukee and over the years became very prosperous.
The plumbing business remained in the family until at least the 1960's.
In 1923, Joseph Wittig made a trip back to Seitendorf. The people of
Seitendorf after World War I were very poor, had little food, and were
in desperate straits. Joseph brought with him supplies, food, and money
for the townspeople. He also bought a new bell for the Seitendorf church
steeple. During the war the old bell had been taken down and melted to
make ammunition. For all his help, Joseph was made an honorary mayor of
Seitendorf. I have a copy of the citation. Regan Kanaley
