Correspondence 2/25/02 passengers #36, 38, 39 Eames
36 Henry Eames is my great grandfather
38 & 39 Charles and Richard Eames, his twin brothers
I know that my grandmother, Henry's daughter, was born in 1865, probably in
or around St Paul, and that she returned to the UK in 1886. She married my
grandfather in 1896 and died very young in 1910. I have documentary
evidence that Richard spent his later years in Salisbury, NC but almost
nothing whatsover about Henry. There is a very little information which I
will look out if it would be of interest to you. Legend has it that a baby
was born on the voyage, but I found no trace last March and apparently
neither have you?? The baby was supposed to have been christened "Argo" -
but later died. (I can't identify your reference to passenger #394??)
The brothers Henry and Richard were "mining engineers".
1. The Eames family emigrated from Petersfield, Hampshire, England,
their birth, marriage and other dates remain unconfirmed. Southampton, the
port of embarkation, is close by.
2. Henry (#36) and Elisabeth (#37), my greatgrandparents, are reported
thus by Aunt Jessie, (a sister, died 1921) in reminiscences written in
Oxford, England towards the end of her life.
3. "Henry Hugh, married 1st Elisabeth Parsons and had two children,
James...(Uncle Jim) ... and Edith ... there was another child, a little
girl born before James & Edith, who only lived four years. She was born
on board ship during the passage from England to America - the ship was
the "Argo" & she was christened Elisabeth Argo".
4. Charles James (#38) married Isabel Blackledge and had two children,
Edith & Charles.
5. Richard Megenan(#39) was Charles James' twin. Married Frances Barnes
in 1856 and had four children, Richard, Jenny, Mary and Minnie Ha-Ha.
6. Therefore 'Francis' (#40) can only be this lady: the passenger list
identifying her as a male 'engineer'.
7. Henry (#36) was appointed the State Geologist for Minnesota in 1865,
the year that my grandmother Edith was born. We do not know where they were
living or where they went thereafter. Legend has it that Edith travelled to
England "from California" - she certainly arrived in London in 1886 and
enrolled at St Bartholomew's Hospital where she trained very successfully as
a nurse (and made a friend, whose brother became my grandfather!)
