Brig Antoinette

the title: "On To Texas!" 1998. Friedrich Schlecht was a passenger 
onboard the ship Antoinette that sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany to
Galveston, Texas in the spring of 1848.

English text follows:
 
The crew was made up of Captain Lueder Wessels, who was somewhat over 
thirty years old, the helmsman who was an extremely large man, a bosun, 
ship’s carpenter, cook, three sailors, two cabin boys, and another
sassy-mouthed lad who served as the steward.  I should also mention 
that both the captain and the helmsman woefully mistreated these youths.
The ship’s manifest (Antoinette) was in part as follows.  There were 
four places in the cabin that were only occupied regularly by two 
individuals, Mr. Frede, a baker from La Grange, and his young wife whom
he had gone back to Germany to fetch.  The other two places were occupied 
alternately by two other steerage passengers who paid an extra charge 
for them.  I soon learned to like all of my fellow passengers in
steerage, and a number of them became my good friends and vice versa 
during our voyage of sixty days across the ocean.  How well I still 
fondly recall G. Markmann and his wife and two children as well as 
W. Huene, A.Staake, A. Urbahn, O. Schloemer, R. Janssen, and
Wilhelmine Reue.
The following traveled as passengers on the lower deck: the 
F. Dornhoefer family along with J. Dornhoefer, the J. Wunderreich 
family, all from Teudingen; H. Sassmannshausen and the J. H. Marburger
family, all from Lasperhuette; J. P. Goebel from Grasebach; J. Krueger 
and D. Kuehn both from Springberg; the J. Gambel family, the F. Gross 
family and W. Greis, all from Werdorf; the J. G. Herold family, 
J. and P. Martin as well as Barbara Scheler and Barbara Roth from 
Haemmern; R. C. Engelke from Magdeburg; the J. H. Steubing family from 
Bicken; the L. Kunz family from Dreisbach; J. H. Baskamp, H. F. Niemann, 
as well as Elise Obermann and Charlotte Keyser all from Engler; 
A. F. Nammann from Chemnitz; the J. S. Richter family and Auguste Naumann 
from Dresden; the F. Kaiser family from Hueden; F. W. Meyer from Ehlentrup; 
A. Frede from Osnabrueck; Elisabeth Rottinghaus and Amalie Schroeder from 
Damme; Lena Strueve from Vechta as well as several other passengers.  I 
will let this suffice as far as the ship and the passengers were concerned 
and would like now to return to the voyage at sea.

Die Mannschaft bestand aus dem Capitain Lüder Wessels,
wenig über 30 Jahre alt, einem riesig großen
Steuermann, einem Bootsmann, Zimmermann, Koch, 3
Matrosen, 2 Jungen und einem andern naseweisen Jungen
als Steewart.
Passagiere. In der Cajüte waren nur 4 Plätze, von
denen eigentlich nur zwei, vom Bäcker Frede aus La
Grange in Texas und seiner jungen Frau, die er sich
aus Deutschland geholt, besetzt waren; die andern
beiden Plätze wurden abwechselnd von zwei
Steerage-Passagieren in Beschlag genommen und der
Mehrbetrag nachgezahlt. Alle meine Reisegefährten in
Steerage gewann ich sehr bald lieb; einige derselben
wurden während der 60 Tage unserer Überfahrt innige
Freunde von mir und ich von ihnen. Wie gern erinnere
ich mich noch an G. Markmann, dessen Gattin und beide
Kinder, W. Hüne, A. Staake, A. Urbahn, O. Schlömer, R.
Janßen* und Wilhelmine Reue.
Im Zwischendeck reisten: J. Dornhöfer aus Teudingen,
