Until this passenger list was transcribed it was believed that my great-great-
grandmother, Judit Devantier Grose, had not emigrated and had died in Prussia.
A family story relates that their ship was sailing for Australia when it ran
into bad weather, ran short of food, and put into New York. The North Atlantic
is treacherous in winter but it is summer in the southern latitudes so this
story seemed plausable. However the passengers on the ship all listed their
destination as the United States so I doubt the family story. Three members of
the extended family died during the voyage. This fact was unknown by the
transcriber until the list was obtained.
The extended family settled on farms in the Town of Wheatfield, Niagara County,
New York near the village of Bergholz and became naturalized citizens. Gottlieb
and Christine Grose are buried in St. Jacobi Lutheran Cemetery in Bergholz.
My grandfather, Johann Grose, met my grandmother, Auguste Werth, on a neighboring
farm. They married in 1878 in St. Johnsburg, New York. Auguste was the daughter
of Carl Werth who emigrated on the Barque Kammonham Roy in August 1843 and is
listed in the ISTG Vol. 4 Passenger Lists. Johann and Auguste eventually bought
a farm in the Town of Wilson, Niagara County, raised eleven children and are
buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, North Ridge, New York. For their wedding
