Correspondence 2/14/02 passengers # Buttner
Passengers 15, Heinrich Buttner, and 16, Hans Michael Buttner, were from
Germany. Though not thought to be blood related, they may have been raised
together. I'm a descendent of Heinrich who changed his name to Henry
Bitner who's family eventually settled in Lancaster Co, PA. There Henry
married and fathered children. His grandson John moved to Greene Co, TN,
married, and had five children. Two of John's sons and a daughter moved to
Rush Co, IN. The sons each received a federal land grant of about 80 acres
each in 1829 and 1834, respectively. The family still farms a portion of
that land. Another of John's sons, William, was a private for Capt Joseph
Hale's Company of the Tennessee Militia during War of 1812. One of
William's sons married a first cousin of President Andrew Johnson; they
moved to Houston Co, TX in 1853.

I assume since it is not capitalized in all cases that "bilander" is not
part of the vessel's name.

I did a little library research and "Bitner" is the Americanized form of
"Buttner"(German) [per Surnames in the United States Census of 1790.
American Council of Learned Studies. Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc.
Baltimore. 1971. GEN 929.4 A512. Page 312.]

Thank you for transcribing this manifest and bringing my ancestry a bit
more alive.
