Simmendinger Register A-L
Simmendinger Register M-Z

This register was originally prepared by Ulrich Simmendinger after his return to Germany from the colonies, where he had been part of the Palatine migration for seven years. The names given are all who were living in 14 early New York settlements at the time of his departure in 1717. It is assumed most of these were passengers of a fleet of 10 ships (*names of ships unknown), 3000 people, leaving England January 1710.

of ships Governor Hunter's papers and other baptismal logs document some of the 10-11 ships which carried the palatines. Here are just a few websites which mention the ships from the kinds of documents I mention, I believe Governor hunter's entire recounting of the fate of these palatines and their ships and his naval stores project can be found on the cornell MOA website. Ships names were Lyon of Leith, Lowestoffe, Fame, Tower, Mary Hartwell, Baltimore, James & Elizabeth, Sara, Midford, Berkley Castle. Herbert was wrecked off Long Island, carrying the tents and supplies for the other ships. The Palatines were disembarked on Nutten (Governor's) Island off New York; with much disease. Some websites with information on passengers and these ships are: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~eddunn/book/chapt3.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyschoha/crbook.html http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/e/u/Brenda-L-Neuhauser/FILE/0001page.htm http://members.aol.com/thefamilygroat/Immigraton.htm The ships departed London, tarrying 6 months in the Thames before a spring 1710 departure. The emmigrants came to London from Rotterdam, having traveled (the germans among them) up the rhine during the terrible winter of 1708 to get to Netherlands. Shipped to London they were housed in tent cities and in residential homes until the following winter, 1709, loaded onto the ships and suffered bad conditions to wait until a late winter early spring departure, not likley until April, 1710, arriving mid to late summer 1710 at Nutten Island. Cheryl Higgins Correspondence 04/02/2004 passenger Lucas My ancestor is Francois/Franz Lucas who came in 1710 from the Palatines to New York. [Ulrich Simmendinger's list] He, his wife Marie Baudouin and their five children left for England on May 3, 1709, in the first party from the Palatine leaving for London. His wife Marie died in London. Francois/Franz and his five children left London in January 1710. Franz married Elizabeth Engeler and settled in New Jersey where he died in November 1741. The five children who came with him were Maria Elizabeth, Isaac, Frans Jacob, Anna Maria, Anna Catherina. I am a descendant of Frans Jacob. Cheryl Rothwell Correspondence 05/21/2004 passengers Lorentz Johannes and Anna are my 10th great grandparents. They apparently came on the ship Midford or Medford on which my 9th great grandfather Alexander was born. The children were; Ablonia, Analisabeth, Madlen, Barwer, Anna Margaretha, Susanna, Hans Jacob, Alexander, Daniel and John. They settled in Peapack NJ with their children. After Johannes passed, two of his sons Alexander and John went to North Carolina. Barbara Lowrance
Ulrich Simmendinger was born in 1672 in the city of Reutlingen which is some twenty miles south of Stuttgart in the Province of Wurtemberg, Germany. His occupation is unknown. He married Anna Maria Schnabel of Cannstatt, a town near Stuttgart. They had two children.
Simmendinger departed for England with his wife and children on July 31, 1709 being attracted to America by the promises of William Penn's Quaker agents, who sought colonists for the newly established commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
In 1710 the Queen, getting pressure from the parties in England, felt it necessary to restrict emigration from Germany. A group of Germans, including the Simmendinger family landed in England after waiting several weeks for permission to cross the Channel. It is here that the two Simmendiger children died. It is assumed that he and his wife were among the 3,000 Palatines who sailed from London in a fleet of ten ships in January, 1710. On this voyage some 480 passengers died and one vessel was wrecked on the American coast. The voyage took six months. After reaching New York they were quarantined for five months on Nutten (now Governor's) Island where 250 more succumbed to ship's fever and 84 orphaned children were apprenticed.
The names appearing here may also be found in the Ration Lists of Governor Hunter, in the Colonial Census of 1710, and at least two in the List of Apprenticed Children, 1710-1714.
