Jennifer has researched this family back to the mid-1700s. Giuseppe is from Misilmeri, in the province of Palermo. He was going to stay with a cousin, with the surname of Cirrincione. The first name is difficult to read, but looks like Gioacotsino. Giuseppe Aiena was born 26 March 1868. His parents were Giacomo Aiena and Cristina Cerniglia. He had 4 siblings: Concetta, Matteo, Natale, Rosa. Concetta was married to Vincenzo Schimmenti, also from Misilmeri. Giuseppe married Caterina Schimmenti (DOB 10-21-1877, Vincenzo's sister) in Sicily and came to America on the Gallia. It is believed that Caterina came later that year. They also returned to Italy at least once. Caterina and Giuseppe had 11 children: Giacomo, Rosalia, Rosaria, Cristina, Marianna, Mary, Peter, Biagina, Matteo, Francesca (called Eleanor, my grandmother). They lived in Brooklyn, NY. Giuseppe and Caterina are buried on Long Island, NY in St. John's Cemetery. Transcriber's notes: The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder. The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the quality of the original document. Passenger #1: sex appears to have been recorded as an M, then written over as an F, all other females are noted as W; dollar amount of 40 is crossed out. Passengers #1-3: there is a big ink blot over the first part of Brooklyn, but it's pretty clear that that is what it is. Passengers #2-3: dollar amount of 20.00 is bracketed to indicate it is for both passengers. Passengers #4-13: dollar amount of 60 is crossed out and replaced with 16; nephew is spelled incorrectly. Passenger #5: across the columns for Prison, Polygamist, and Contract is written "52 Morrell St." Passengers #6,7,10,12,13,17: daughter is spelled incorrectly. Passenger #13: a check mark over the age makes it difficult to read, perhaps 4 months. Passenger #14: fisher is spelled incorrectly; the last part of the town is written over and cannot be read; $10 is crossed out and replaced by $9. Passengers #15-19,24: Philadelphia is spelled incorrectly. Passenger #20: occupation may be mason, but it is difficult to read; Misilmeri is spelled Missilmori. Passengers #21-23: only the last few letters of the occupation can be read; dollar amount of 30 was crossed out and changed to 5 1/2. Passengers #24-28: occupation can barely be read due to light copy, may be mason. Passenger #24: original dollar amount, possibly 12, is crossed out and changed to #17; cousin appears to be the same as for passengers 15-19, but spelling differences in name and street are clear. Passenger #25: dollar amount of 50 crossed out and replaced with 4. Passenger #26: passenger's name clearly looks like Affronta, while cousin's clearly looks like Affronte; dollar amount of 30 crossed out and changed to 5. Passenger #27: name is crossed out, part of surname cannot be read; dollar amount and whether in US before crossed out; there may have been another letter before "obor". Passenger #28: name is crossed out; no dollars noted; there may have been another letter before "Obor". Passenger #29: original dollar amount (10?) replace by $38. Passenger #30: occupation not totally clear, appears to be mason.
