The use of a ? indicates a letter or words that cannot be read due to the poor quality of the original document copy. The column headed "Sex" are written as "M" and "F" on this list. Passengers 1 and 2, 4 and 5, 6 through 10, and 11 and 12, have bracket lines connecting them, after surnames and after given names. Married women have "calling or occupation" written as "L'wife" Some ditto's are written "do" rather than ditto marks. 1 Passenger is listed as visiting her "husband Giovanni", who was actually her son, not her husband. Over Column 16 is written $100. 2 Written next to name, "niece", she was actually granddaughter of passenger 1. Unable to read writing under the Columns 7 and 8, is written over and has a line drawn through it. Most other Columns are blank, or have ditto marks. 3 Piz?o, looks like Pizzo, or Pizro, Column 10 writing is small, looks like Potenza, no address for father, Vzo. Column 16 unable to read, has something written over. Columns 18 (part of), and 15 thru 27 are written slightly below line. Column 26 could be brown or Braisn. 4 Over number on list, is stamped "ADMITTED". Column 7 looks like no with a U (read) which seems to run into "No" (write). Column 10 "Syr??, is written over, and Za?le?" has ink blots over some letters. Column 11 ?a?lef could be Jahlef, or Jallef, but letter is not like the J of John below. Column 14 appears to be "no" but has an S written over it, Column 18 Serian Chi??? Co. and 508 Draib??? and ? (last may be ST, or 80) are written small unable read and run, onto line for passenger number 5. Columns 23 to 29 are written over, though some is readable, over Column 23 is Med, over 24 to 25 seems to read centry?, 27 to 29 appears to be something like "Presaneliting or Presamlity?" - an unreadable word -then "afficting" then another unreadable word. In Column 29 "place" is clearly written. Correspondence 1/18/01 passengers 4 & 5 Please note that passengers - 'Saif': Syr??, Za?le - in the passenger list you have transcribed should be most probably - Syria, Zahle. Zahle is in present day Lebanon but at the time (1913) before the end of the 1st world war there was no Lebanon as it was all Syria (albeit occupied by Ottoman Turkey) I have been doing research on the Syrians who boarded the Titanic and am familiar with many of the names of these villages, towns and cities. My book should be out this year some time. Leila Salloum Elias 5 Over number on list, is stamped "ADMITTED". Column 2, given name is written over unreadable, and next to name appears to be "son". Rest of columns are blurry, ditto's or blank. 6 Column 11 writing is blurry, Mother could be Nicetia, or Concetta, Column 19 24 and 25 are light and blurry. 7 Line under name. Column 8 and 9 have what appears as "Clariacs" and Column 10 is unreadable, both seem written in different hand writing. Eye color appears dark, with a word written underneath. Rest of Columns are light, blurry, with ditto's or blank. 8 Line through name. Columns 19 thru 24 are light and blurry, no height listed, and ditto's for Columns 26 & 27 word children written vertically up from line 10 to 8. Rest of Columns are light, blurry, ditto's or blank. 9 Line under name. Line has a dark smear through columns. Rest of Columns are light, blurry, with ditto's or blank. 10 Column 6 and 7 have numbers written through them. Column 8 and 9 appears to have "Italy, It, So" written in a different hand. Rest of Columns to 28 are light, blurry, with ditto's or blank. Column 29 shows "Italy, Naples". 11 Column 11, and 18 ???io could be Mevio, Murro, Minro, Ninro, Niuro, and in Column 18, Husband ?io could be Fria, or Jia. Column 26 could be brown or Braisn. 12 Line through whole entry, difficult to read. Written next to given name is "son". M???o, looks more like Murro, but could be any of above (line 11). Column 8 and 9 have what appears as "Clariacs", and Column 10 is unreadable, both seem written in different hand writing (as line 7). 13 Line is partially cut off for Columns 1 through 12. Baddo??? appears to be Baddoier hoewever Column 11 is clearly Baddani, Geor??na, letters lighter than the rest of name, unreadable. Column 10 is unreadable, scribbled over. Column 18 Brother Badd??? appears written over, name is unreadable. Columns 19 through 24 light, blurry. Column 26 could be brown or Braisn. Column 29 S???? letters blurry, ??? appears to be Nil, Fit????on, unsure of any letters which are small and blurry. Contact the transcriber, Kathleen E Lo Pinto Vignolini, for more information. Passenger 1 and 2 are my family. Teresa Ficano Lo Pinto is my bisnonna or great grandmother, and Teresa Lo Pinto is my aunt (father's sister). My bisnonna was born 14 Nov 1848, and died 31 Dec 1941 in Begheria, Sicily, Italy. Her parents were Giovanni Ficano (born 1808) and Antonina Maggiore (born 1816). Teresa's husband, Francesco Lo Pinto, was in the Bersagleria of the Italian Military. Each of her three sons were born in different comunes (towns), she may have followed her husband on his tours of duty? Her 3 sons came to the US: Giovanni, with his wife Anna Grassi, (my nonno e nonna, grandfather and grandmother) in 1899; Federico, in July 1900; Guiseppe, at age 15, in September 1900, on the SS EMS with his parents. Giovanni was a doctor; Federico, a Pharmacist, both trained in Italy. Giuseppe became a Pharmacist in the US. Little is known of Giuseppe, other than he married Elisa Somma between 1908-1913. Teresa is listed in the 1910 NYC census, at her son's residence, Mulberry St, NYC, as a language teacher, age 62 and a widow. Not noted, how long she was in the country. Giovanni and Anna are listed as living here 10 years. Stories go that Teresa was a very strong willed woman (for those times). A true matriarch, she felt free to assert herself to her husband and sons! (Possibly because her family's wealth, owners of large olive groves.) My father's sisters talked of visits to Italy, and staying in what they called "the Mansion", with many beautifully furnished rooms. We know Teresa often took one of her 5 grand children to Italy for a summer, and returned with them. This particular trip, was a return from Italy with her granddaughter Teresa, age 9, my father's older sister. Thus far we know of 4 trips, 1900 (with husband Francesco and son Giuseppe on the EMS, which lists her as Giovanna), in 1913 this ship, in 1929 SS Vulcania, and her last voyage in 1939, at age 91! She may have left Italy out of Naples, because she had family and/or friends there. Teresa notes a brother, Rosario, living in Naples on this ships manifest, and in Palermo on the Vulcania manifest (recently posted in ISTG).
