Passenger #30, Philipp Mostberger, was born
in 1823 in Bischofsheim (now Rhinebischofsheim), Baden, Germany, the son of
Elisabetha Mostbergerin. He emigrated to Buffalo, NY, and married Marie Eva
Rauber in 1850. They had eleven children, and Philipp, who worked as a
malster, or brewer, died in 1895.
Correspondence added July 30, 2007, passenger 104 Joseph Hugein and family
"Joseph Hugein", age 59, and wife 'Catherina', age 44, and six children:
"Joseph", age 20; "Franz", age 18; "Peter", age 16; "Ludwig", age 8; "Catherina",
age 4; and "Ursula", age 2.
I found these passengers listed on the ships passenger list for the "Zurich",
which arrived at the Port of New York on June 3, 1844; they are patently my
great-great-grandfather and his family. This is only the second piece of
concrete information I have been able to find about what seem to be very
elusive ancestors.
The family story recounts that Joseph Hegly (or Hegley or Heckly or Hugein or ?
(the exact spelling is unclear) and his wife, Catherine, brought four sons and
two daughters to the United States from Switzlerland when my great-grandmother
Mersula was two years old. She was born "near Basel" in 1842. She had four
brothers and one sister. The names recorded for them, in this order, are Joseph,
Frank, Peter, Louis, and Catherine, who was two years older than Mersula. The ages
of the other siblings were unrecorded. The information given on the ships list is
an almost exact match for our small, largely oral, family record!
The family lived in New York for awhile, my grandmother has said, then moved to
a small farm in West Brookfield (now Massillon) Ohio. Joseph, Catherine, and
my great-grandmother, who took the name Mary, are listed in the 1860 Ohio census
for Stark County, Ohio. Joseph's age is given as 96 (!), Catherine's as 62, and
Mary's (Mersula/Ursula) as 18. By 1860 the four sons had disappeared--moved back
to New York and no longer communicated.
One of them (Joseph?) may have become a "master weaver" and another (Peter?) may
have gone to sea and was drowned. Sister Catherine married a Jake Brandt and had
three children, one of whom moved to California and had some ten children.
Catherine Brandt may have died by the age of 23 or 24. She, too, and her family
seem to have disappeared from records.
Mersula/Ursula/Mary married James Ralston in about 1862. Their eight children
were born in Ohio. The family moved to San Francisco, CA, in 1878, and to San
Jose, CA, in about 1910. James died in 1916, and Mersula died in San Jose in
1939 at age 97.
This is more than a small paragraph, but it is about all the information I
have (other than romantic tales about Joseph's escape from the Battle of Watherloo,
and Catherine's disinheritance and lost fortune) about the family members listed
on the passenger list. I send it in the hope that some of it might bring further
useful information--the correct spelling of the "Hugein" name, for example, or
the location of the lost sister and brothers or ?--from some unexpected source.
