Transcriber's Notes:
The place of origin for all but the last 5 passengers on the list
is given as Barder. This could possibly be Baden, Germany.
Some occupations and cities were misspelled by the list writer. He also
was inconsistent in his capitalization of words. Most misspellings can
easily be interpreted. Since many of the passengers were going to Ohio,
Cintiniti and Cincineti are probably Cincinnati and Sanduske and Sanduska
are probably Sandusky. Indiane is probably Indiana and Wiscensin is
Wisconsin.
7 Hummel - occupation poorly written. It appears to say "water",
so perhaps he was a waiter.
11 Schmidt - first word of occupation contains 4 or 5 small letters
which are indistinct.
62-68 Klingele - destination and occupation are blank on manifest.
69,70 Loew - destination and occupation are blank on manifest. The
destination could be Ohio since that is written for Joseph Loew.
79 Rubsamen - occupation is probably cook. The 2nd and 3rd letters
actually look like 'oe' or 'oc'.
134 Strub - occupation could be tayler, a misspelling of tailor
181 Friedrich - Ludne may be the surname rather than the given
name for this passenger.
219-223 Feldere? - probably Felderer. The first word of the occupation
ends with 1 or 2 small letters, possible 're' or 'n'.
229 Maier - Joseph, age 52, died on the voyage 24 April 1854
252 Vogt - occupation is very poorly written, but looks like farmer
264 Nohe - age is on a fold. It looks like 16.
278 Bangert - Maria, age 1/2, died on the voyage 1 May 1854
297,298 Flape - place of origin is Belgium
299 Messner - place of origin poorly written, it looks like Barthen
300 Schmidt - place of origin poorly written, it looks like Barthen
299 Schel - place of origin poorly written, it looks like Barthen
Correspondence 05/14/2005 passengers #225-228 GOSS
I found Albert and Anna GOSS on this manifest. I have not yet found the
village where he and Anna were born. He came to America with his wife
Anna Maria and two daughters: Rosalie, age 10 and Amalie age .08. He
was a farmer and they settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. According
to the 1860 Census of St. Clair County, Illinois, they had a son Augustus,
born in Illinois.
Rosalie married August Scherle and she became my gGrandmother. They had
8 children, but two died young. They had a large number of grandchildren
and ggrandchildren.
Amalie married Joseph Hoock and they had many descendants also.
I am also researching August Scherle, Henry Hess, from Switzerland;
Anton Widmer/Witmer and Elizabeth Wust/Wuest, other ancestors.
