Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original
recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due
to quality of original document.
The use of a ^ indicates the following letter or letters are
superscript
* Country in which they intend to become inhabitants: all are going to
the United States, therefore, this column has been eliminated
* Died on the voyage: no one is listed as died, therefore, this column
has been eliminated HOWEVER: there are multiple entries that are
crossed out. They may not have been on the voyage. But as some are
husbands of families with children and, in one instance, a child, I
think it more likely that these people died on the voyage and the
listmaker did not enumerate the deaths as instructed.
* Part of the vessel occupied: Noted by this transcriber at the
beginning of each section of names, therefore, this column has been
eliminated
NOTE: People of the same surname are not necessarily listed together.
Look for people of same surname on this and other pages of this
vessel's transcription.
NOTE: This ship can be found on the Direct Hamburg Emmigration List
which contains more complete information on the passengers' previous
residence. In some cases the penmanship is clearer or there is a
slightly different spelling. Also, when the LDS microfilm was made
some pages were omitted and other duplicated. The passesngers are not
in the same order on the two lists.
? Deputy Collector: illegible scrawl
* Passenger #305: m in Zimerman with line above: Zimmermann
* Passenger #336: Short thick line drawn through # and age
? Passenger #339: Phonetic for Iver?
? Passenger #345: possibly t: Hustert
* Passenger #346: Balthasar
* Passenger #379: Short thick line drawn through # and age
? Passenger #389: Phonetic for Iver?
? Passenger #403: possibly beginning O. Fourth letter is tall, no sign of
it being crossed as if t, no loop as if l
* Passenger #406: u in Muller with umlaut: Mueller
* Passenger #420: Short thick line drawn through # and age
* Passenger #455: u in Kluss with umlaut: Kluess
* Passenger #459: Frederick
* Passenger #463: Short thick line drawn through # and age
? Passenger #463: 24 or 34; line drawn through obscures first digit
* Passenger #473-483: assuming listmaker meant Germany. Interesting to note
passenger 383 with surname of Gerber also.
* Passenger #475: possibly meaning Henriette
* Passenger #485: probably Auguste, female
* Passenger #487: possibly meaning Ulrich or Uhlrich?
* Passenger #504: o in Goppert with umlaut: Goeppert. Short thick line
drawn through # and age

A description of the Steamer Thuringia can be found at Thuringia
The Philipp Wagner family came from Maibach,
Friedberg, Hessen, the Evangelical Lutheran Parish of Munster, where
the family history has been traced in the parish records back to 1700.
Their life in the United States was a brief and troubled one. Philipp
died in July 1872 of Tuberculosis and Typhus.
Although his wife is named Eva here, she was born Anna Elizabeth Roth.
She descends from the Roth family of Maibach, several of whom were
schoolmasters. Elizabeth was pregnant on the voyage; William was born
in June 1872 and died in Nov 1874. She drowned in the East River off
Blackwell's Island in May 1880.
Nothing is known of Eva (the younger) or Heinrich in this country.
Jacob was born in 1856. He married in 1882 and had 2 known children.
Margaret (born Anna Margarethe) was born in 1851. She married 1) John Hohn (Passenger #576) of
Cleeberg, Usingen, Hessen-Nassau in 1874. They had 4 children. She
married 2) Johannes Roth, also of Maibach, in 1884 and had 2 more
children. Of her son George, nothing is known but he presumably died
young. Her other children and grandchildren made successful lives in
New York City.
If you believe that you may be related to this family, please contact
