RMS Teutonic
I, Peter John Irving, Master of the R.M.S. "Teutonic" do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown, from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the last residence and country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. So help me God.
Sworn to this 27 May 1891, before me John (surname cannot be read)
List or Manifest Of all the Passengers taken on board the R.M.S. "Teutonic" whereof P. J. Irving is Master, from Liverpool and Queenstown burthen 4244 tons.

for the missing letters and a period after the last letter (e.g.
Mich'l. for Michael, W'm. for William, Lab'r. for laborer,
For'd. Stge. for Forward Steerage.) Christiana, listed as the
last residence of many passengers, is now Oslo, Norway.
4 - 7 Clare and Sligo are separate counties in Ireland. A
fairly detailed modern atlas (4 mi. to the inch) doesn't
show any place called Clare in Sligo. There is a village
called Aclare, and a place called Claragh (pronounced
Clara) but Clare is clearly written in the residence column
9 The ink is smudged over the second digit. Most likely, but
not positively, his age is 25
10 Her age could be 31 or 36. The ink puddled, making the
downward stroke quite thick and slightly wider at the
bottom
26 After Fran is a blob of ink which could be a colon with
the dots joined together, indicating an abbreviation,
probably for Francis. It looks vaguely like the letter s,
but I doubt that it is, as it is definitely not connected
to the previous letters
27 Could be McMur or McMeer. If it is two e's rather than a u,
the ink filled in the loops which are narrow in any case
30 The "space occupied" by Maria McGrath is definitely "For'd.
Steerage" which is probably a mistake. Only males were in
For'd. Steerage. Females were in Aft. Steerage or Steerage
Rooms
42 The ink is smeared. The ? is either an e or an i and the
name is either Dignan or Degnan
45 The ink is faint and someone has written some numbers and a
1939 date between this line and the next. The occupation
could be Spinster or Spinner or something else
46,47 The occupation is too faint to be readable
55 Naugatuck is the correct spelling of the Connecticut town
59 Middle initial is either I or J
60 Probably Jun'r. The third letter is unclear, but doesn't
go below the line or high above it, and the last letter
is raised with a period under it, indicating an
abbreviation.
61,62 Last Residence probably Armagh, an Irish county, but some
puddling ink on the first downstroke of the m makes it
look like an o, so possibly it is Aronagh
65,66 The first letters of the last residence are quite faded.
There is the suggestion of the top of a capital N for the
first letter
68 Her age could be 21 with a fat downstroke on the 1, or 20
with a filled in narrow zero
70 The nationality was crossed out and "English" was written
in its place
71 - 83 The nationality column from 71 to 83 is either too faint
to read, or has ditto marks which may refer to the
original crossed-out nationality at #70 or to "English"
which replaced it, or to another nationality too faint
to read. Some are definitely Irish. See notes under
individual numbers as noted below
71 The nationality is so faintly written it's impossible to
be certain of it. It is about 5 letters long, and the
first and last letters are tall. It might be Irish.
Also his last residence, Dundalk, is in Ireland
72 There is a crossed-out or smudged word at the extreme
left of the nationality column, which could have something
to do with the previous column, as all others in the
nationality column are written toward the center. In the
center is a word too faint to read except that the final
letter could be an h. The last residence could be
Warrington or Harrington
73,74 Nationality too faint to read. Possibly Irish, as first
letter could be an I and last letter h or k. Last
residence could be Drumleague, although the third letter
is too faint to read. There is a Drumleague in Cavan,
which is abbreviated here
75 There's a ditto mark for nationality. See description of
nationality in #73, above. Some letters of the last
residence are too faint to read. However, there is a
Kilglass in Sligo and Sligo is the only county in
Ireland ending in the letters igo
76 Same as #73 as regards nationality. Wexford is a county
in Ireland
77 This is my grandfather. Although his nationality is too
faint to read, I am positive he was Irish. His townland,
Montiagh, in Sligo, was misspelled here.
78 Last residence possibly Clare, but the tops of the C and
the l are too faint to be certain of this. It also could
be a place with a missing first letter, followed by viare
80 Ty. is probably an abbreviation for County Tyrone, Ireland
81 Last residence might be Sussex, or the final letter could
be two letters, v and e, written close together, Susseve
82 The first digit of his age is unclear.
83 Under last residence, I believe Bal. is an abbreviation
for a town. The C'o. is an abbreviation made by raising
the o and placing a period under it. I think this is an
abbreviation for County, and Kildare is a county in
Ireland
84,85 There is an inkblot over the last few letters of the name.
The last letter descends below the line, and may be a y
or g. The second digit of the age of #85 is very faint
but descends below the line. The writer formed the
numbers 7 and 9 in this manner
88 This may be either Bailiboro or Bailieboro. There is a
space between Baili and boro where there may have been
a letter which faded. There is a Bailieboro in County
Cavan, Ireland
89 Only a small mark at the base of the first digit of the
age is present. It could be the bottom of a 2, but this
is not certain
90,91 The colon after Alma indicates an abbreviation, but I
have always seen this as a full name. The last name
could be Printall or Grintall
96 The fourth and last letters of the last residence could
be either n or u; the sixth letter could be h or k
98 The age could be 11 or 4. There is a faint horizontal
line connecting the two downstrokes which could be
smudged ink or part of a 4
101 The missing letters look like ll or possibly tt. The
tops of the tall letters are faded
102 Only the lower part of the capital letter after Mc
shows. The name could be McSherry or McTherry. The
second digit of the age is faded. It descends below
the line. The writer formed the numbers 7 and 9 in
this manner
103 The name is Toul or Toal. The third letter is not
closed at the top but curves slightly towards closing.
The second digit of the age is not clear; it might
be a 5
104 The middle initial could be a J or an I. The writer
forms both letters identically at times
108 Last residence faded and looks completely blank
109 Last residence possibly Nottingham? There is part
of a letter descending below the line about where
the g would be, and a vague suggestion of an h
following it
110 The name is Macken or Mackin. The first letter
(maybe 2 letters) of the last residence is unreadable
111 There is space for about 5 letters preceding ara. The
letter immediately preceding ara could be a u or an n
112 - 113 The last residence column is blank
114 In the last residence column only the bottom portion
of the first letter is faintly visible. This place
name could begin with a C or an E
115 - 117 The last residence is too faint to read, but it looks
to be about 10 letters long, the first two are perhaps
N,o and the 4th or 5th a letter that descends below
the line. The last letter may be h or k
122 The middle initial could be I or J
124 Only the inital P of the first name is legible, but it
is a short name, probably three or four letters long
126 Only the initial M of the first name is legible, but it
is a short name, probably three or four letters long
132 The middle initial could be a J or an I
134 The top part of this initial is missing. It could be
a K or an R
135 The letters are very faint, especially the tops of the
letters and the last letters. Looks like third letter
could be h or n; the next letter n or u; the next two
letters might be s,o and the last letter is impossible
to read. May be Johnson, but this is just one
possibility
136 The first letter is faded at the top and there is only
a small loop to the left of the downward stroke. Could
be an L or maybe an S. There is an inkblot over the last
four letters, but the first of these appears to descend
below the line. The second digit of the age is faded,
but is either 7 or 9
137 This is very faded. The first name could be Emm
followed by the colon, indicating an abbreviation. But
the top part of the first letter is very faint, it could
be a C, followed by an h with the top missing, then i,m.
The last name is the same as #136, see above. It is
indicated by ditto marks
141 Her age is indistinct, but the first digit has a little
curve at the top and may be a 2
142 The numbers are very faded. The first digit shows only
a u-shaped curve at the bottom. It could be the bottom
of a three. The second digit looks like a very fat one,
but could be another number where the ink filled in
the loops
146,147 The last letters of the name are too faint to be certain
of, but the name could be Thum, Thums, or Thurn. The
first digit of David's age also too faint to read
159 Name could be Tilma, Tilena, or Tilnia. Middle initial
looks like L but is smeared at the bottom and could
possibly be a T
161 The name is masculine but all the information is for a
female. There is space enough for one or two letters
to have followed Emil, but the entire page seems clearly
reproduced with no faded areas
172 There is an inkblot over the age, but the age is probably
more than 3 and younger than 14. Children in a family
were usually listed in descending age order, and any girl
older than 14 or so was listed as spinster, not child,
unless she had an occupation or was married
179 The intial could be an I or a J
185 This name could be Lauter or Lanter
187 Between the second m and the final n, one letter was
written over and slightly to the side of the original
letter underneath. The one underneath is illegible.
The one written over it could be n, u, or a.
188 The given name Eliz is followed by two smudged letters
after the z. Neither is a tall letter nor one that
descends below the line. The first is attached to the
name, and the second is detached and may be a smudged
colon signifying an abbreviation. The first letter of
the surname could be a P or an R, or possibly a B.
The ink was smeared over it and over the next 2 or 3
letters. None of them descend below the line
189 The ink is smeared. The first letter of the given name
could be O; of the three letters after the l, none
descend below the line or are tall letters. The last 3
or 4 letters of the surname do not descend below the
line and the last letter may be n or m
190 - 193 Da. may refer to the Dakotas which had become states
only two years previously. There is a Hillsboro in
North Dakota
196,197 The questioned letter in the surname may be n or u --
Aarhangen or Aarhaugen. The third letter in the last
residence could be s or r; the ink has puddled on it.
Da. could refer to Dakota; see #190 above.
201 The third letter of last residence could be u or n.
The destination Da. may refer to Dakota; see #190 above.
Manville is clearly written here, but Manvel and
Mayville, both North Dakota towns, sound similar.
202 The given name may begin with A or H. The third letter
of the surname could be u or n; Sangerud or Saugerud.
The third letter of the last residence could be u or n
205 The destination Isperning is clearly written, but there
is a Michigan town of Ishpeming
209 The first letter could be I or J
216 The first questioned letter somewhat resembles the
numeral 6, in that the left part of the circle extends a
short way upward. It is probably o, but conceivably could
be a short b. The next unknown letter is either a or u.
It doesn't quite meet at the top, yet the left side does
curve to the right, unlike a u.
224 The surname ends in either n or u; it is either Then or
Theu and looks more like the latter
229 The two missing letters look like tt, but they are not
crossed. They could be ll, but there is no loop in them.
The name is either Sattervold or Sallervold
233 The questioned letter could be n or u -- the name could
be Hangan or Haugan
234 Ink was spilled on the missing letters. The final letter
is either h or k. The last residence could be Jehon or
Ichon
235 The last residence could be Jehon or Ichon
236 The name could be Hoseytyo, or Hosujtyo; the place Jehon
or Ichon
241 The ink has smeared over the last three letters of the
given name. The first could be an o, the second which
descends below the line a bit could be a p, and the last
which rises a bit above the other letters could be an h.
