[Typeset at top of all pages of passenger list, except pg 30, from SS Switzerland 7 May 1891:] "Extract from Section 9 Act of Congress, To Regulate the Carriage of Passengers By Sea, Approved August 2, 1882 And on the arrival of any such steamship or other vessel within any collection district of the United States, the master thereof shall deliver to the officer of customs who first comes on board the vessel and makes demand therefor a correct list, signed by the master, of all passengers taken on board the vessel at any foreign port or place, specifying the names of the passengers, their age, sex, calling and native country of each passenger, verified by the oath of the master. For the violation of either of the provisions of this section, or for permitting or neglecting to prevent a violation thereof, the master of the vessel shall be liable to a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars." (For U. S. Commissioners of Immigration.) Port of Philadelphia.
[Transcription notes for "Extract" page heading: The Cabin passenger page has blanks filled in with "Cabin" (top center); "Switzerland", "Antwerp" and "91" (written over the 2nd '8') Page 31 has "Switzerland" and "Antwerp" written in the appropriate blanks; all other lines left blank on pg 31 and all lines are blank on pages 32-55.]
Columns 1-7 represent: "NAME." "AGE." "SEX." "Native Country." "The Country of which they are Citizens." "Occupation." "Intended Destination or Location."
Columns 8/9 were omitted due to space considerations and repetition.
Column #8: "Whether Visitors only; or, intending to be permanent Settlers." Passengers #9 Lobkowitz and and #10 Moran were noted as Visitor, all others as "Settler."
Column #9: On pages 31-55 is titled "Remarks."
While this list appears to be roughly alphabetical by the first letter of the surname, it is not. A surname may be found anywhere: an H and K are found in with the A surnames, and more B-Z surnames follow the first set of Z's. Like surnames are also not all found on the same page.

Correspondence 07/05/2005 passengers #612-617 Willmann / Szarmach
My great-grandparents are listed as passengers 612 & 613, August Szarmach &
Barbara Willmann. My grandfather, Bronislaus Szarmach was only a month old
(dob 4 - 1 - 1891) when the family embarked for Milwaukee, Wi with him and
a 2 yr old sister, Martha. They settled on Milwaukee's eastside, sponsored
by Barbara's brother Anton Willmann, already here. They had thirteen children
altogether, with only 7 living to adulthood. August worked as a laborer, doing
carpentry in the building of St. Casimir's Catholic Church, finished in 1900.
One small son, Teofil aged 7, drowned in the Milwaukee River that same year,
falling from one of the barges used in the construction of that church.
Bronislaus became a citizen of the US in 1931 and had his name legally changed
to Bruno Scharmach. He married Anastasia Wroblewski on June 4, 1918 and had
two children, Roman Scharmach (who had four daughters) and Irene Scharmach who
married Robert Nauertz on June 18, 1949 and had, besides myself, three sons.
Bruno died in September of 1974, still a resident of eastside Milwaukee after
a lifetime of working in the shoefactories. The youngest of August and
Barbara's surviving children died in August of 1999, Monica Fliss, at the
age of 98. Bruno was the best storyteller ever, and after hearing about
his family for years, I am thrilled beyond expression to find his family's
passage listed on the S.S.Switzerland on May 7, 1891. husz@sbcglobal.net
