Transcriber's Notes:
PLEASE NOTE: The captain used ditto marks extensively such that most
surnames only appear once in the original document. He also used ditto
marks for the occupation and country columns. According to the column
headings, the fifth column represents "the country to which they severally
belong" and the last column is "the country to which they intend to become
inhabitants". Beginning with passenger 54, however, he wrote "France"
for the destination country as well as the country of origin, which is
obviously incorrect. He made the same error with subsequent passengers
from other countries. Beginning with passenger 136 he also reversed the
occupation column with the column showing destination. The occupation was
moved to the correct column for continuity. There were no deaths on the
voyage.
*Age Where two numbers appear, this indicates years and months.
*Country See note above
* 1 None of the other columns are filled out for this passenger
* 2 no age or sex given for this passenger
* 3 Wherever the captain wrote a small letter above, as for an
abbreviation, I have separated it with an apostrophe.
* 4 The captain seems to have put "Jr" after any child having the
same name as a parent, male or female.
*15 might be Chalard
*25 probable accent over the "e". Might be Bu.
*45 might be Fowrer
*51-53 might be Howald
*54-135 see "please note" above
*55-58 might be Gaessart
*91 the "1" was marked by ditto, probably in error
*109 The name "M??ie" is written over another name, but is probably
Marie, judging from the "Marie Jr" in the same family.
*119 might be Luntzinger
*121 a misspelling of Deutsch?
*136-160 see "please note" above
*137 might be Affolter
*147 film dark here, first and last name very difficult to decipher
*150 might be Aibert
*159 There are no ditto marks after this name. Instead, there are
three underlines, suggesting that the captain was unable to
determine the rest of the name.
*160 might be Paguin Lieven
A Personal Note from the Transcriber
Passenger 86 is my great-great grandfather, Friedrich Schmitt, born in
1800 in Alsace. His family was German-speaking. After arriving in the
U.S., he used the name Frederick Smith. He and his family lived for a
few years in Pennsylvania, where his first wife, Jeannette (87),
reportedly died. In 1835 he and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio,
where he remained and where several descendants still reside. He married
Catharine Kaetzel in 1836 and had many more children, including Philip
Schmitt, from whom I am descended. Frederick died in 1880. Frederick
Jr. (89) also went by Smith and Schmitt. He fought in the Mexican War
and in 1851 settled in Springfield, Ohio, where he died in 1905. I have
not yet determined the fate of 88, 90, or 91, nor the relationship of this
family to the other Schmidts on board. - Janet Schmitt Dobson
