Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates the omission or error made by the original recorder.
The use of an ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due to the
quality of the original document.
Some of the given names and occupations have been abbreviated by the original
recorder by omitting several letters in the middle of the name and then
superscripting the last letter. On the above list the '^' symbol indicates
that the last letter is superscripted.
Examples are: Tho^s - probably Thomas
W^m - probably William
Ja^s - probably James
Rich^d - probably Richard
Sam^l - probably Samuel
Marg^t - probably Margaret
Serv^t Maid - probably Servant Maid
At various places within the copy of this manifest, the last column is blank or
is off the edge of the paper - this is the column indicating the Country to
which they intend to become inhabitants. This affects passengers #112-136, #167-206,
#231-278, and #286-355. All other passengers have United States in this column EXCEPT
passenger #137, who has Great Britain listed in this column. Since the destination
for this voyage was New York, it is probable that most of blank entries were meant to
be say "United States".
# 66, 87, 88, 104, and 282 are listed with the given name of Cath - possibly
an abbreviation for Catherine, Cathryn.
# 40 - "Country which he is from" - only the last four letters are readable, but
possibilities are England, Ireland, and Scotland.
# 66 - last name "Pi??????" - third and fourth letters are possibly "c", last
letter is possibly a "y".
# 99 - occupation abbreviated, possibly for "Instrument Maker".
# 107 - last name "M?Mahon", probably McMahon.
# 108 and 294 - occupation abbreviated, probably for Blacksmith.
# 112 through 136 - the handwriting was extremely light and mostly unreadable. No
"Sex", "Occupation", "Country From..." or "Country To..." could be seen at all.
# 186 - listed as a male, but is most likely a female with this given name.
# 219 - last name "Dig???" - last three letters could be "ham" or "nam".
# 226 - last name "????y" - there is a tear in the manifest - the first letter might
be a "K" or an "R", the next several letters are missing, and the last letters may
be "lly".
# 294 and 295 - last name "Ferr?ll" - the fifth letter could possibly be an "e" or "u".
# 319 - "Country From..." is listed as Irish, probably meant to say Ireland.
# 335 through 340 have no "Country From..." listed. It is probably England, which is
the "Country From..." listed for #334 who appears to be the father in this group of
names. Also, #337 through 340 have no "Sex" listed.
# 349 through 355 have no "Country From..." listed. It is probably England, which is
the "Country From..." listed for #348 who appears to be the father in this group of
names. Also, #351 is listed as a female, but has the name "Ellis" which is the same
name as the male (father?) #348. Also, #353 and 354 were written together on the
same line with a "6" after Grace's name and the name "Christop?" possibly abbreviated
and with a "4" written after it. The "6" and "4" are again written in the "Age"
column vertically within one line.
Correspondence 09/04/01 passengers #14-18 HANDRIKIN
I have 5 immigrant ancestors who arrived on the Ship Siddons from Liverpool,
England on 5 April 1842. (Your transcriber listed the arrival date of
16 April 1842.)Since the date is illegible on the original, ISTG uses
the date filed by the National Archives, which is 16 April 1842
My ancestors are Thomas Handrikin, his wife Mary; and Mary, Michael and
Patrick Leonard. (They are numbered 14 through 18 on the list.) Thomas
and his wife Mary (Howard) are most likely the brother and sister-in-law
of my gr-gr-grandmother Jane Handrikin Leonard. Jane arrived in NY in
1844 with her remaining children, John & Bridget, and her sister and
brother-in-law Mary Handrikin Keena, James Keena and their 7 children.
These immigrants from Ballyna Roman Catholic Parish, County Kildare,
Ireland, immediately went to settle in Racine County, Wisconsin for a
few years and then some moved on to Kildare Township, Juneau County, WI.
Mary Ellen Leonard and her husband Michael Matthews later moved on to
Albion, Boone County, Nebraska. Pat Leonard Rinebarger
Correspondence 2/19/02 passengers #125-136 Mounsey and Edgar
According to "Harrold's History" of the Mounsey family, a letter from
Thomas Mounsey dated 23 November 1842, and the obituary of William Edgar,
I would have the following corrections for your transcription of the
Siddons passenger manifest for 5 April 1842. In reference to passengers
numbered 125 to 136 these additions need to be made to the list:
Thomas Mounsey from England; Jane Edgar from England;
Isabella Edgar from England; William Edgar from England;
Henry Edgar from England; Matthew Edgar from England;
Sarah Edgar from England; Martha Edgar from England;
and John Edgar from England.
I further believe that you may have missed additional passengers as well.
The date is also most probably incorrect as well.
Regards, Gary Edgar
Mr. Edgar, since we can only transcribe what we see on our copy of the
original manifest, we cannot change the transcription. However, we can
add this correspondence and add the names to our surname lists which will
help other researchers find this family. The date on the original is also
not readable and the National Archives has inserted a label that shows the
date as arrival 16 April 1842. In reviewing the original, the transcriber
still cannot "see" the names as you list them.
Thank you very much for your interest. ISTG Staff
