These few were extremely hard to read, as there was nothing to compare them with. * Children's ages written as fractions of a year have been changed to months. # 59 Letter could be an e, too unclear. # 73 Could be a (u) with a mark above it or e i. # 89 Last three letters could not be made out possible rtH, but are run together and not clear. # 90 The last letter of surname is either an L or a T, not very distinct all lower case t's looked like l's except for being crossed at bottom. # 113 Not clear enough to make out the fourth letter of given name could be a i or r. # 148 ? letters not clear and run together could be ae, ue or eu. # 162 The given name appears to be Ma followed by either two R's or a N, could be abbreviation for Margaret. # 163 Surname starts with either a capital F, or S. # 164-166 Surname possibly ends with either an h or k, very easily could be either. # 177 Unable to determine this letter. # 211-212 Occupation for these two entries could not be made out. # 218-220 This letter is either a combination of 2 letters or a scribbled n or u cannot determine what it is for sure. # 225 Unable to make out last two letters, is written unclearly and mixed with tail of the y from above name. # 213-226 Occupation may start with a lower case f, and fourth letter could be an l, not written clear enough to be sure. # 226 County- first letter could be a M, but looks more like a partially sideways B, can not make out first 2 letters of second half of country.
Correspondence 05/5/2003 passengers 213-216 Joly
My subject is Henri-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière, a political, lawyer and business man of Québec, Canada.
Joly was born in France. His mother was a French Canadian and his father was from France.
So, he grew up partly in Canada and in France; he was educated in France. I did not
find the date of his arrival in Canada after his education until I visited your website
giving the passengers lists of ships.
I found in the family archives the name of the ship on which he and some members of
his family came from France and I knew it was in 1849 or 1850. The name of the ship
is Robert Kelly. Your website gave me a proof of the date of their arrival in New York
from Le Havre, France.
On your list, the Joly family members are no 213 to 216.
Joly, G (Pierre-Gustave Joly, the father)
Joly, J (Julie-Christine Chartier de Lotbinière, wife of Pierre-Gustave Joly. She was
usually named Julia)
Joly, Amélie (daughter who was usually named Amélia)
Joly, Henry (He was named Henry when he was a child and when he grew up, he wrote his
name as Henri.)
JOLY DE LOTBINIERE, SIR HENRI GUSTAVE (1829-1908), (Passenger #216)
Fourth Prime Minister for Quebec. First Protestant to occupy this position.
from http://95.1911encyclopedia.org/J/JO/JOLY_DE_LOTBINIERE.htm
In French with a picture - http://www.assnat.qc.ca/fra/membres/notices/j-l/JOLYHG.htm
Canadian politician, was born at Epernay in France on the 5th of December 1829. His father,
Gaspard Pierre Gustave Joly, the owner of famous vineyards at Epernay, was of Huguenot descent,
and married Julie Christine, grand-daughter of Eustache Gaspard Michel Chartier de Lotbiniêre,
marquis de Lotbini~re (one of Montcalm’s engineers at Quebec); he thus became seigneur
de Lotbinière. Henri Gustave adopted the name of de Lotbiniêre in 1888, under a statute of
the province of Quebec. He was educated in Paris, and called to the bar of lower Canada in
1858. On the 6th of May 1856 he married Margaretta Josepha (d. 1904), daughter of
Hammond Gowen, of Quebec. At the general election of 1861 he was elected to the house of
assembly of the province of Canada as Liberal member for the county of Lotbinière, and from
1867 to 1874 he represented the same county in the House of Commons, Ottawa, and in the
legislative assembly, Quebec. Joly was opposed to confederation and supported Dorion in
the stand which he took on this question. In 1878 he was called by Luc Letellier de St Just,
lieutenantgovernor of Quebec, to form an administration, which was defeated in 1879, and
until 1883 he was leader of the opposition. During his brief administration he adopted a
policy of retrenchment, and endeavoured to abolish the legislative council. In 1885, as a
protest against the attitude of his party towards Louis Rid, who was tried and executed
for high treason, he retired from public life. Early in the year 1895 he was induced again
to take an active part in the campaign of his party, and at the general election of 1896
he was returned as member for the county of Portneuf. He had already in 1895 been created
K.C.M.G. On the formation of Sir Wilf rid Laurier’s administration he accepted the office
of controller of inland revenue, and a year later he became a privy councillor, as minister
of inland revenue. From 1900 to 1906 he was lieutenant-governor of the province of British
Columbia. He twice declined a seat in the senate, but rendered eminent service to Canada
by promoting the interest of agriculture, horticulture and of forestry. He died on the
17th of November 1908. (A. G. D.)
